is there anyone out there who's done either of these & knows the difference between the two in terms of examinable content, difficulty, scaling, assessments, lectures/pracs, etc? the syllabus pdf doesnt seem to tell me much

Unless you're an idiot you should generally do advanced subject as they get 90+% of the HDs.

are the final exams the same?

You just learn more content in 1901, and you do get scaled (not that much though). You have to do extra work during pracs compared to normal people, and you have different exams (if I recall correctly, the multiple choice questions are the same, but the short answer questions are different...or something like that). Either way, both the Adv and Normal student found the subject a big headache. But I have heard it gets better in 2nd year.
