Back on the topic we've turned this thread into:

Rich parents don't let their kids be lazy, remember? They're not allowed to drop school etcetcetc blahblahblah.
Actually it's possible poor parents push their kids to do well at school as much as richer parents (also poor and rich should be considered relative the particular community not so much the whole of Australia),

it's just that if you're born in a poor household you probably have uneducated parents, and there's a particular sort of lifestyle/culture associated with that, and it goes a long way to determining how you think, talk, your manners and habits and how you present yourself

that's what makes a difference when these kids go into schools, because at school you get rewarded for behaving, speaking and acting a particular way

so in essence the kids from wealthier homes with educated articulate parents get more benefit out of school, as school currently functions.

For a clarifying real-life example, read Schroedinger's posts and then read some of the various shire kids' posts in other forums and note the difference in expression, then extrapolate that onto other things

It's not about how much parents push their kids, because poor parents do that too.

This was my argument all along. But you keep pushing that poorer are dumber and end up as dropouts. Logically, you'd try to keep these people in school and help them with their dreams of being a doctor or whatnot. I know lots of poorer kids who have those dreams then just give up because of the kind of household they come out of. You need to support them, not say "you'll end up like the other thousands of you".
And I ws seeing this from a completely different perspective, I think we misunderstood each other.
I was thinking of immigrants. Well-educated people who come to a different country and lose everything. They leave everything behind and end up working at 7/11 etc. These people have degrees and specialisations, they had a profession. I had in mind ethnics. So it's a completely different story to what you've got in mind, I presume.

About private schools: they are aimed at wealthy people. Because you don't see their reps/ambassadors (sic?) going around to all the homeless people offering them enrollment forms. Poor people don't pay 20K+ p.a. for education when it's available for (almost) nothing.

it's just that if you're born in a poor household you probably have uneducated parents
All I'm saying is that we shouldn't just assume these guys are dumb and they'll drop out, etc.

Either kind of parents push their kids.
But those who are struggling and left everything in their home country so they could live in peace and their kids could get a good education would be more stringent about it. No way in hell will they let their kids drop out, even if it kills them. Because they sacrified their jobs, friends, family, etc. for the opportunities their kids finally have.

I don't say that

why do you find it so hard to grasp the idea of "this is what has tended to happen in the past"
I get it. You don't seem to get the idea of "let's support them instead of making assumptions they'll end up like this just because it's happened to other people."
Not everyone ends up in the same position.

Oh, and I'm very sure Shakespeare was filthy rich then, well-educated with very cultured parents and he lived in the shire. Oh yeah, history's totally got it wrong.

Australia
definition: age 15 and over can read and write
total population: 99%
male: 99%
female: 99% (2003 est.)

So, what's the point?
Being able to read and write doesn't = skilled professional. Kids in primary school can do that. I guess what they're aiming for with this is to improve on Australia's skills shortage.

It just seems like a stupid way to go about it though.

Yeah, because you totally get practical hands-on skills and experience in uni. Theory is for TAFE students.

Seriously this is so stupid. I know that it seems that education is everything these days but if you would rather leave school in year 10, then do it. There are enough retards at my school that shouldn't be there and they're only pulling down the class average.

You believe the purpose of education is to have a high class average?

Or to give all individuals the chance to learn to the best of their ability?

you're a fucking idiot.

IF they are 'retards' then you shouldn't have any trouble beating them, which would then they would play a extremely minor role in the moderation of your hsc marks. IF you rank first they will not affect you at all.

Whilst people that leave in year 10 to start a trade are 2 years ahead of people that complete their hsc, people that completed their hsc have gained valuable life skills, such as maturity, and have most properly attained their provisional drivers license. Not to mention having a HSC instead of a meaningless SC.

I believe that students shouldn't be forced to go to year 12 if they don't won't to be there. They'll only stuff around and cause problems.

Ok "retard" was a little harsh - but really those guys that should've left in year 10 do nothing but find ways to try and screw with those guys that actually want to do well.

Anyway, retard refers NOT to those guys that are trying their best to achieve but struggling to do well BUT those guys that don't care about learning and are only at school because their parents forced them to go. They basically come to school and make it hard for those students that are serious about their studies.
