Hmm, I have no idea what I actually want to do?
I could do med- but do I want to? I'm cynical enough already and I cried when I had to dissect a rat coz I felt sorry that it had been born, just to be killed for me to disect. My friend had to cut it open, but after that you kinda forget about it- after all, it had cool insides.
Or optometry- but it could get boring doing basically the same stuff everyday.
Or Biomedicine and work in a lab? Or I can just give up on the hope of a high enough enter and do Psychology?

Meh, I really don't know, but the aim of my post was to ask about the UMAT, and whether any of you think it is worth it to pay around $300 to do a preparation courses? If so, which ones(ie. MedEntry or AMEPP)?
Sorry, I got sidetracked earlier!

tip: there is no money.. its just stable... and u dun need to know the ASX back to front.. however u need to kno the eTG well.. lol
Do you mean that there isn't much money to be made in medicine? I'm not sure where people get this idea from. Sure, medicos can't expect to do as well as corporate lawyers and mining engineers but nor can most people. The fact that physicians in the public system seem to be garuanteed to eventually reach a salary some 5 times that of the average australian is nothing to scoff at.

given that ppl that get into med could have been corporate lawyers or engineers.. there is not as much money as one would see in Australian medicine compared to the US.. i mean.. its not LOW.. but its not lik crazily high either..

thats not completely true.. u have not stipulated which physicians?..... i will say this.. at present senior registrars make about 6 figure sums.. early-mid 100k... the average australian wage is 50K-60K at present..... removing the bottom 5% and top 5%... its lik 33K... ( salary wise.. there are quotes of avg about 78K... so u dun want to go there)..

by ur estimates...public physicians are guaranteed.. about 250K-300.. give or take.. at lowest .. its about 150K

I suspect ur wrong about that comment.. its mabbe 1/2 of that maximum estimate..even FRACGP make about 110K -120K at present.. per yr.. FT..(current wages were in the weekend Australia health/employment section in lik jan.. for public positions for FRACP posts.)

i think one of the problems is that physicians generally get paid less than cutters.. public even less.. and depending on which hospital ure at its different... i would say that the comment u made may be true for private... which can be up to 500K- 7 figures..

im just saying.. go in for the passion and the stability.. cos u may not be able to afford say whole apartment blocks.. its fun mostly.. and its different.. and u wont be jobless.... well at least true for non-full fee at present for graduates of 2009...=P ( this is not a comment about post 2010.. its just the figures have not been released :p and im not willing to speculate..)

I was going by this document for the payment of staff specialists (i.e. fellows/consultants and what not):

http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/policies/ib/2007/pdf/IB2007_024.pdf

Since it was NSW health I assumed that it gave details for remuneration of government payed specialists, where the stated salary is 170-240k (minimum. I've seen similar figures for WA as well). I was working with an average Australian salary closer to the 45k mark, but fair enough if those are the actual figures.

Nonetheless, I maintain that people who pooh-pooh doctor's salaries aren't living in the real world. Not only are we in a statistically fortunate country, but Australian practicioners are also in the upper tier of Australian earners. I'm very unsympathetic to those who are sad that Tetsuya's is outside their regular restaurant price range when Haiti rages with hunger riots, leading to the removal of their prime minister.

yeah... but i agree.. its not bad...

i think given the time it takes to get to a yr 6th specialist... ud be about lik late 30s to early 40s... if u did med from yr 12 leavers.. so i mean its not bad money at all.. but then u need to realise tat if u want more than tat medicine isnt for it.. corp law and mining engineering is..

btw.. im certain tat there are better places than tetsuya.. :p.. i have high school classmates where doyles is their regular...so i think u just have to think about hte calibre of ppl tat do medicine.. many could do other things.. but thats the sacrifice.. u dun retire by ure mid 30s.. u sit $4000-5000 exams lols!

Mining Engineering and Corporate Lawyers get their money straight out of uni, People in Med have to wait another 6 or 7 years to start earning there money, or you can move to USA and make 200-400k pa.

I do a UMAT prep course, and have done very well in it. i think i am good at the interview (i cant say for sure yet tho lol). My only problem is my UAI is not up to scratch. is it still possible to get into Med with a UAI of like 90 - 94? Im willing to do bonded and stuff.

Haha, Tetsuyah's is just the one that stands out in my mind (it often tops Sydney food guides and makes 'world's top restaurants' lists) - it's certainly more dear than Doyles! I've never done Tetsuyah's myself, though I have been to Doyles once for a special occaision.

Im doing one right now, (lol i had the first day of my two day workshop today, and having the second tommorow), and i think it was helpful for me. the guy explained the ways to answer the questions, and different techniques to use. They give you heaps of practise before hand too, which is good because then the UMAT doesnt come as a complete surprise on july 30 :)

but yeah i guess you'd have to apply pretty quickly now, places are probably filling up.

ps i do medentry

umm yeah its benificial, and expencive, so its kinda worth it :). i mean i did well in the practise exam afterwards, and i dont think i would have done that well with out the help. and all the practise tests they give you are pretty helpful.

I havent done any of the other courses, so they might be the same, i dont know. the guy that teaches us is heaps friendly and a good teacher. i heard that Icarus has a heaps strict lecturer.

Another article to dispell the doubts of those who would claim that doctors don't earn much money (from the looks of the attached article, some earn far too much!):
