This is one of those questions to the future doctors we have here such as Adrita, who has first hand experience in such degree like this (not med though)....

Is it true that in Human Anatomy (Medical Sc. Degree) you have to know the scientific name for every bone, muscle, tendon you name it!

I'm majoring anatomy so yeah I do in a way. As for medicine, it is mostly an introductory anatomy course. If you specialise, the. I guess you would need to know more.

Memorizing is fun, its basically got me through HSC and I am still doing it in Uni.

Rote learning is fun !.

Not sure about the comparison between universities but at UNSW we do not cover just introductory anatomy. We cover almost everything you'd learn in an anatomy major, probably around like 85% of it.

With regards to the names, you would need to know the anatomical names (since it's the only name) of what you learn. How else would you communicate it with someone?

Well with just anatomy, you memorise names of anything in the body, their relationship/position to each other, nerve and blood supply, how nerves and vessels travel, where do muscles attach and what actions are they responsible for, you learn about how the brain is split into different parts and their functions.

Anatomy by itself isn't very useful, probably be best to combine it with a physiology major so that you can learn about functions of different parts of the body and how the anatomy correlates with function.

And no, the latter part is not true at all.

Not sure about BMedSci, but in medicine anatomy is ultimately only useful if it is clinically relevant-ie not everything needs to be memorised. Depending on the university, I imagine you could flunk anatomy and still do okay.

Honestly I am sure most people find Physiology much harder. Anatomy of the head and neck and functional anatomy is quite hard in terms of anatomy but I am not sure whether you do that in a medical degree... (unless it is relevant like others pointed out).

I would assume those who have terminated studying medicine just because of Anatomy probably had no desire to do so?

Anyway if you are explicitly talking about a medical science degree and majoring in anatomy, you would have to know everything, yes.

As a university student who currently wants to major in anatomy, how many hours of study are you expecting to putting in each day?

This honestly varies from person to person and their rate of absorbing material and also how efficient they are with studying. But myself usually about 2/3 hours a day normally and now during midsems about 4/5 hours.

Most of the time I get through 2 subjects in those times.

We will see how this affects my marks. Will let you know next week

I'm doing Advanced Science btw Med sci is too restrictive and not enough space for electives and stuff. So yeah

But yeah first year med sci anatomy shouldn't be too hard. It's pretty introductory stuff.

Last question, the students that you do adv science with, do they want to study medicine as well or just go to other careers involving their degree but not a doctor.

Basically, advanced science is a very broad degree and you can major in a lot of different things. Since I'm doing a major that normally med sci students do, I have a lot of subjects which overlap with them. Pretty much everyone doing med sci wants to do med. You will find very few who don't want to.
And for adv sci peopole major in a range of things. I haven't actually met anyone who is majoring in anatomy like me. So it's safe to say most people doing Adv Sci aren't looking into doing med. But then again med students come from a whole range of courses (com/med sci/engo)

We do it at UNE (part of the anat 100 elective, lol). Actually, we pretty much do everything to the point that we can even teach surgeon trainees.
