Hi guys, (I have just finished my HSC - class of 2024)

So I've decided to do B/Medical Science solely as a pathway to post-grad medicine (or undergrad via schemes such as the 'Lateral Entry Scheme' at UNSW if possible). I have received early entry into med-sci from UTS, Macquarie, Newcastle, and ACU. - Which one is better? (I'm mainly looking at UTS or Maq uni). My ultimate goal if I choose to do med-sci is to do it at USYD or UNSW but seeing as they do not offer early entry or SRS, I'm looking for backups.

I understand that Maq uni also offers B/Clinical Science which includes a built-in GAMSAT prep course, but of the two (UTS and/or Maq uni), which one has the better course in terms such as:
- General peer competition (i.e I heard UNSW is very competitive and I was wondering if that is for med sci in all unis)
- Resources/facilities
- Teaching and support
- Success rate/estimate number of students transitioning into med
- General uni reputation

Please keep in mind that I am purely choosing B/Med Sci as a pathway to medicine. I am also not concerned about the ATAR requirement. I have a solid backup plan and course which I have secured.

Thank you.

*Sidenote
Some of you may ask why I am choosing this longer pathway to medicine instead of just taking the UCAT and doing the undergrad courses. Reason is, my Year 12 subjects weren't exactly geared towards medicine (i had the mindset of doing law - I did do 2 science subjects though, so my STEM subjects are strong). Thus, I didn't take the UCAT and I do not intend on taking a gap/break year. If anyone can clarify, Is it possible to take the UCAT in my first or second year of any uni course? And if I do score well, am I able to transition to any undergrad med course?
Also, please don't bother with the 'its long, tiring and hard' - I am willing and determined to take the challenge.

i reckon go for non-standard entry into med whilst doing another degree rather than relying solely on post-grad 🥰 UNSW, JCU, Newcastle + WSU are part of this scheme. depending on the uni, some will only take gpa into consideration whilst others may combine your gpa with ur high school atar.
but my honest advice (as a dent student and as someone who's spoken to med sci graduates), since i was in ur boat sm time last yr about to do biomed at monash, steer away from this degree. u cant 100% guarantee that ull get post grad med, and once u graduate (if u don't get into med) the job market for med sci graduates is quite limited.
but if u think that this is best for u then go ahead!! <33

also i recommend doing the gamsat from 2025 (results last up to 4 yrs for most unis), even if ur a first year uni student. altho its expensive, it gets u prepped for the setting of the exam so that u can improve ur marks yr by yr, if u rlly wanna take the post grad route. good luckkkkk!

Ooo tysm for the advice. I will defo heavily consider taking the Gamsat next yr. And if you don't mind me asking, what course did you do instead of biomed to get into dentistry? I've only really chosen B/med sci as it's the most common/known path from what I can tell.

I didn’t do another course to get into dent, just sat ucat and did interview (in 1st yr rn!)
From ppl in my uni also looking to get into dent and med, they’ve started doing degrees like economics or finance related. It’s pretty popular bc at least if they don’t get med, they’re likely to get a stable job in an area they like (like maths and stats).
I recommend going for a course that suits ur interests, nowadays a lot of students are starting to steer away from the myth that doing med sci increases ur chances of getting into med 💞💞
