I never said that doctors shouldn't pursue their interests... my main point is that opting for 3 years of non-medical study in a provisional scheme may be too big a sacrifice to merely chase a hobby. I'm going to be pursuing BA/MBBS at UNSW - the year off will really give me an opportunity to reflect on myself and what I want to do, and it's not too big of a deal, the one year off. Being actively involved in your interests is great, it'll help you become a better doctor but in some cases it isn't the most practical option. Like I said, you don't need to have a degree to pursue these other interests.
I suspect it is because you forget that there is little room on the internet to articulate any comments..

im still on-call.. have you ever wondered what you are committing yourselves for?
abusive patients... others that think your judgement is flawed and difficult patients.. the couple of on-call nights that i have been on is one of the times that you truly practise medicine in its purest form... you are the only one to deal with everything.. it can be very daunting and yet fulfilling... i spent tonight anxious and wondering what i would have done instead... humans are a funny thing.. and everything in my textbook is out the window with each individual..

thats my $0.02

You guys do realise that you can't really "combine" medicine with another degree in the sense that you can do both courses concurrently. Think practically. If you're going to pursue medicine, then you're going to be a doctor in the end, yes? Doing something like commerce/medicine at USYD seems purely like an internal conflict of interest - the commerce will not help you with medicine, and medicine vice versa. By all means pursue your interests, but it need not be rewarded with a piece of paper (let's not forget that you don't really do med until your "side" degree is finished).
If the human race is to survive I expect that it is essential that students begin to see the intimate connections between medicine and fields like economics, anthropology and philosophy. We do not need a generation of doctors who wear blinders.

... so, what of USyd now offering combined med with commerce, and with economics? Cool. :D

Politics! Yes, yes, politics!

Why isn't there Law/Medicine? :(

Oh, "Medicine: UNSW vs USyd".
Well, superficially, on a !pro-not-UNSW day, I look at it like this; UNSW - get your degree ASAP, clinical; USyd - get your degree when you're a geezer, research-emphasis'd.

I thought UNSW was much more specialised in med than USyd.
Yah, no.

Also UNSW has a focus on rural health as well via RAHMS.
"USyd has six major teaching hospitals in the greater Sydney region, and more than 40 hospitals in urban, coastal, and rural NSW, and the NT."

And ... USyd has MIRAGE, (and, as you mentioned, UNSW has RAHMS (and, UWS has RHUUWS)).

That could maybe be because a requirement for the medicine course @ usyd is a uai of 99.95.
Yeah, no.
Med/Music Studies is 99.5.
Med/Commerce / Med/Economics is considering applicants with UAI's of 99.5-100.00.

ETA:
Usyd wins in this context
No; F.O.

Nah people have different interests.

Also UNSW has a focus on rural health as well via RAHMS.

There are quite a few 100 UAI's doing med @ unsw...like at least 5 I know of. In fact one girl is transferring to UNSW from Usyd this yr (I"ve heard). So no, not "ALL PEOPLE GETTING 100" go to Usyd.
I think it's only 5. (also, hai lollian!)

i'm going usyd over unsw atm.
purely coz i can combine with music. and usyd is pretty (yes yes im being superficial i know :) )

i dont think the unsw program is half bad tho!
Like, only 2 people get the music/med program iirc

There seems to be a tighter cohort at UNSW med though. I have one friend doing Arts/Med at Usyd; she hardly ever sees any other med student because she's completing her Arts degree first. Whereas, my other friends doing UNSW med seem to have bonded tightly with other UNSW med students through constantly being in classes together, Med Revue etc.

Yah, no.
Research opportunities certainly exist at USyd but they receive much more emphasis at UNSW, especially given that research is a compulsory component of the UNSW medical program.

Assuming you've got the luxury of choosing between both, it depends whether you have other interests and whether you like those interests enough you're willing to:

a) Spend three years pursuing that interest
b) Gain a degree in that interest
c) Risk the insecurity of a provisional offer, though if you're getting such high UAIs I don't think this would be an issue
d) Willing to sacrifice 6 years of medical education for 4 years

2 people I know doing Science/Medicine did it because they really liked their interests. One I think is now doing the Medicine component of her combined program, and the other loves chemistry so much he's doing Honours in it this year, then med next year. Both went on exchange, which is almost impossible to achieve in med considering how specific med units are. I don't think exchange was a major factor in making their choice, but it certainly is a very attractive option.

does anyone have any good reliable info on the med part of the combined usyd program?
i.e. is there much clinical contact, is the program any good, contact hours?
also, would it be hard to maintain a credit average in the combined part, say music or arts?

The "med part of the combined usyd program" is the graduate entry medical program (ie the only degree Sydney offers for medicine).

Some people find maintaining a credit average difficult. Some do not. My advice is to not pay much attention to those who claim it would be easy or difficult if they have not undertaken that line of studies themselves, because they lack sufficient experience to make such calls.

Hey, an elective is like an exchange in the part that it's going overseas....
