Is it worth the wait and having to do a three year degree before applying for Medicine?

I asked this question on another forum but I would like to know what those doing graduate entry medicine think.

Did your previous degree add to anything even if only to broaden your universal knowledge of the world or do you wish you just got in and did undergrad medicine elsewhere?

Medicine is definitely worth the wait man. Go for radiology, then specialise into neuroradiology. It will be 16 yrs in total of study, but guess how much you earn, even without specialisation.

+1 agreed to above.

But to answer your question about the 3yr thing, i think it gives you more time to explore your interests, and to confirm your passion (or lack thereof) for medicine.

There are better jobs you can do for money.

Choosing a career solely based upon the salary is dumb! you have to have an interest in it to excel, pass the exams and last 16 years of no life!

Oh man you guys took it the wrong way. I didn't mean it in terms of "Just for the money" I meant that the money in neuroradiology is a fantastic reward for the hard 16 years you put in studying for it. It gives you financial stability and freedom, in exchange for 16 years of hard work. I intend to undertake those 16 years because I want to have financial stability, not because im a greedy bastard. Anyway all the people who would do it just for the money most probably would fail the course because it is extremely difficult and only if you are truly motivated (Which comes about from genuine interest in a subject) will you succeed.

I dunno about 'freedom'.
No, actually you'd be surprised. Unspecialised radiologists actually have more free time than usual doctors or surgeons, they are not on call all the time and work much more loosely. Read about them if you wish on google. Then if you specialise your work is even more rare so you have more free time.

Im assuming thats what you meant by freedom?

hayabusaboston is right with about the freedom part there is an acronym R.O.A.D. to happiness, which stands for radiology, anaesthesiology, opthamology and dermatology. they have the best lifestyles of medical specialties. but i think he may be wrong in calling a radiogy not a specialty.. it is as far as im aware, doing something like neuroradiology would be a sub specialty.

Yea I meant neuroradiology is the real specialty, I dont really consider radiology a specialty in itself as much as neuroradiology, but officially I guess you're right, radiology is a specialty in itself

I think this is a bit well over exaggerated.

No! Unless the other degree is related to/assists in knowledge of Medicine or you're doing Grad Entry.
