From what I've heard from family and friends, melbourne is better for commerce and arts. Whereas Monash is better for engineering.

you're right that monash is tops for eng, but melb being better for comm and arts sounds like pre-2008 i.e. pre-melb model info to me. can't speak for comm but i'm a 2007 entry unimelb b.a. and unimelb arts has gone downhill since the model.
