"Greatest"? I don't know. In speaking of his achievements, he may be seen one but it really depends. It's like saying whether Roger Federer is the greatest tennis player ever or not.

Swimming isn't a real sport.

I'd like to see how he'd do on land, he would drown.

To be honest, I think it's sad that Spitz' record has been equalled (and may be broken) because the 72 Olympics had the great tragedy involving the death of jews and also this incredible achievement of seven gold medals by Spitz, an American Jew. The Best and Worst moments, as it were.

I find Phelps incredibly arrogant and irritating. The Olympics are as much about great emotion as they about sporting results, and frankly Spitz deserves to have the record and keep it unchallenged as a testament to the ages.

Incredibly soppy, I know, but that's my opinion. Nothing is safe from the path of time and chance, and all that jazz.

He has grabbed the 7th Gold Medal
:jaw:
1) The slo-mo replay showed the Serbian's hand touching the wall first
is this the case or did Michael touch first?

2) Do you think he can get his 8th gold medal?

Yes, michael touched first, the replay is above water and doesn't show all the detail below the water.

Aussies have a chance of winning the medley relay tomorrow, mostly because Brendan Hansen isnt breastroking as well as he can - but its going to be v. difficult.

I predict another gold to Phelps :(

I kind of want the us to win the relay. would be good to break such a long standing record and set the bar for future swimmers at 8 medals

if we measure success by the medals, then he is without doubt the greatest.

so what if he is cocky? if you have the straps to walk your talk/ arrogance, feel free to be as cocky as you can imagine. it may be unsportsman-like, but how often is that quality displayed by american athletes?

cocky people have a lot of self belief and confidence and they have the drive to excel. That's why you get little cunts like C. Ronaldo dominating sports.

I don't see how Phelps is any more arrogant and cocky than some of the Australian/other American Olympians.
Maybe not the greatest Olympian ever, yet, but well on his way there. Time will tell.
I still think he's on drugs though.

the thought of phelps being cocky didn't cross my mind til i read peoples' replies here. how is he cocky?

he's just annoying because he's winning all the gold medals by a mile. except in the 100m butterfly, but then just powered his way through. i don't know which one's more annoying. winning by a mile... or that way... when you finally think someone else is going to get it.

Youve got to be joking. Thats highly un-australian.
why don't you go all cronulla on my face, then?

it's ok, i've got all the other 350 events to cheer australia on in (even the ones they don't compete in)
