Hey guys!

Anyone else going for mid-year entry into any UOW courses? I've applied for Commerce. Hoping that starting mid-year won't be too much of a disadvantage if I get in..

In terms of coursework, you won't be at a disadvantage. However, it will be difficult finding people with similar timetables. However, with the low contacts hours, you should still be able to arrange breaks with friends, if you so choose.

You won't be disadvantaged at all, commerce doesn't really flow on from the last semester or anything.

But I do imagine it may be hard adjusting which is kind of to be expected, i'm still trying to find my feet.

But i'm hating on MARK101 atm. Saturday exams ruin lives.

MARK101 and MGMT110 are the easiest by far. Oh, and also COMM110 isn't too difficult (is it COMM113 now?).

ECON101 was the worst subject for me....

What a great next semester I have to look forward to. I think I shall be doing PASS, lol.

I've skipped all the lectures (timetable clashes), all PASS classes, and haven't read the lecture notes... so that may have something to do with why I'm doing badly at it.

I think next week, I'll just sit in back to back PASS classes for 3 hours. Maybe it'll be enough to catchup, considering they'll be covering revision stuff.

PASS = peer assisted study sessions, they offer it for the hard subjects apparently

Umm yeah parking is pretty shocking, a good idea is to park at North Gong station and catch the free bus!
Although I never have trouble finding a park for any classes after 2:30, and all my early classes I just get the free bus!

Basically this. It's where an older student (usually 3rd year or post-grad) basically runs a session, which is mostly a recap of what goes on in the tutorial/lecture. It's usually more personal than a tutorial, often giving more casual ways of understanding things. They're also more open to explaining questions.

Parking's pretty bad, even with all the new work they've done to improve it. If your driving, consider driving along Robsons road and picking up walking students. You only need two if your by yourself to get free parking, which usually isn't full.

I am so conflicted right now. I was all set on doing commerce but then I was looking through some of my friend's old textbooks and commerce seems so boring and mathsy. Plus I don't know what majors I'd want to do. I look at the managers at work and there is no way I'd want to have their job. (I work at woolies). It's making me think management wouldn't be for me. How did you all decide on doing commerce? What's your motivation?

Well I didn't mind business in high school, so yeah thats why I chose it.
But to break up the monotony of doing straight commerce, i'm doing a double degree with communication and media studies, which is actually really fun, except for understanding audiences.

The only mathsy sort of subjects you HAVE to do are accountancy and an economic and maybe a finance one.

You could also see communication and media studies and do the advertising/marketing specialisation if thats what you're interested in.

I don't think I chose commerce because I absolutely love it, but it was interesting, and gives you some useful skills for life.

I'm doing a double as well (with Creative Arts), and I don't know if I'd really want to do just straight commerce. The Commerce course is a bit bland IMO, but that's because I've got a Creative degree by comparison. Management in terms of Wollies is probably a bad example. For a career move, you'd go into management in an area you enjoy. You just need to determine what that would be.

And that's a good point about management absolutezero. I'd probably go into sports management or hospital admin if I did that.

No worries. You could look into a double with Health Science, as from those two jobs, it would probably suit you. Just an option...

Exactly. I'm in a double with Commerce (not at UoW though) and I can safely say that its NOTHING like Woolworths management (I also work at Woolies, I'm a supervisor so I deal a lot more with what their management is like nowadays). I've always thought of Management as the kind of Commerce major that you do with something else, like HRM, Marketing, Accounting etc, rather than on its own. Saying that, I find the actual content of my management units interesting (though the teaching is really dull).

I transferred into Arts/Com mid year (I began with Arts on its own) so starting mid year is not at all a problem academically IMO.
