for memorising, I read it a couple of times.
and then I write it out without looking.

for maths, I was stupid enough to study from the textbook. and for 4 unit maths, don't study from fitzpatrick!!! its terrible!!!!!

for english, depends on your ability. I'm shit in English so I memorise essays.

for other subjects I'm doing like eco, just memorise everything and then practise.

I make notes based on the syllabus, and where it is vague, from two sources - a textbook and a study guide.

Then, I do ALL the questions they give. Then when we move to the next topic, get your notes - and trim them down. So you read through them, and pick the important points.

For me throughout the year I only did my Maths homework and some past papers, I just read the notes on BoS for Physics and Chemistry and copied other peoples English work or rushed the work in the free period. But during the trials and HSC I crammed like hell and ended up with an ATAR in the mid 90s.

i know this is a realllyyy bad concept of studying because it would take me like 2-3 weeks to scrap up a 70-80 :/
prelim = work out your study methods, yeah?

I had weird techniques.. but they only work for certain subjects, and also me (My friends wtf'd).

WIth business studies, I recorded myself saying the whole syllabus onto my ipod, and slept to it every night (on repeat)... Business studies is VERY much straight to the Syllabus (the content itself is not hard).

Also, with IPT and Business, I'd get a friend to ask me a topic/point, and i'd have to "teach them" as much as I knew about it. Then take it on turns.

For some reason, whenever I "taught" someone about the dot point, i remembered it later.

Make syllabus notes in the way you answer extended exam questions.
Focus not on speed, but on perfecting notes.
No need to make notes for easy parts.

Do at least 3 pastpapers with time limit before important exams.

Read over your notes.


If you get homework on areas that you are confident with / homework that is unlikely to improve your knowledge/skills, don't do it lols.
I rarely did my school maths homework for this reason.

Of course, if it's an assessment task, do it.

That's what my uni lecturer told me first day. It's pretty useful.

This is 100% true. It has been researched to find these results. Also with memorising things, there was an article on it when i was reading a magazine at the doctors. I can't remember it completely but here is the jist of it.

When we learn something for the first time, our brain slowly loses this information. Once our brain has lost about 70% of the concept (usually 24 hours) you should revisit the concept again. In doing this, the reoccurence of this information causes us to loose it at a slower rate and repeating this revisitation enables us to understand concepts much better after repeatative learning.

This is why doing SO MANY examples in math and past papers will give you an edge in exams rather than writing theory notes. Putting something into practical gives us a better working knowledge of the concept. (80% of what they USE and DO in real life)

i don't know about the other subjects i'm doing though -___- hoping for a 96+ but actually, aiming for 99+ lol..

I'm not sure about your subjects other than Maths.

But for English - focus should be put on understanding the rubric. Ask yourself - what is required of this module? Constant reading and essay writing/creative writing is essential.

And I mimic what Namu said. The HSC is like a competition - people will be competitive. If they can trick their competitors into thinking that they aren't doing any work, in the hope of lulling others into a false sense of security - they will. So assume everyone is studying harder than you, and that will give you the drive to do well.

That being said, boxhunter speaks truth - it is important to find a balance between social life, sport/exercise and studying.

The worst bit of BOS is wankers starting a thread with a question like

"What would you say if i told you I did 2 hours of study a week and still got 90+?"

Then when everyone says they are full of shit, they come out with the defensive "Well its true, you can ask my friends" lines and all of this crap. Don't believe a word any of these people say. To get 90+ you need consistent and diligent study.

Anyone who tells you different shouldn't be listened to.

I friggin hate those people too.

But the fact of the matter is, "consistent and diligent study" is not absolutely necessary to get over 90.

I don't claim to have gotten over 90, I didn't. But I know it's possible and have seen it done.

If you have natural talent and you're at a relatively reputable school it's easy to crack 90.

Haha, at my school, pretty much everyone goes around saying they're "so screwed!!" and they've "barely studied at all!" and end up getting awesome marks in every exam.
Although, I think at least some of it might have something to do with confidence, not just the whole "lull everyone else into a false sense of security" thing - sometimes I'm really unsure if the amount of study I've done for an exam is enough and I'll feel like I've only done a minimal amount and say so if anyone asks. But then I walk into the exam room and find that it was enough and I end up doing alright.

Although I'm still a '10er, might as well contribute to the question asked. My study methods are pretty much what everyone else has stated:
English - learning the rubric well, practicing and perfecting essays, memorising
Maths - tons and tons of past papers
Eco & Chem - learning concepts, practicing past papers, polishing the art of bs
Mod - reading heaps and once again, polishing my ability to bs xD (gotta love the essay-based subjects ).

Some of them BS it to make them seem smarter, some are just freaks.

Kid at my school, mxt1 for prelim, does a single sheet of study the night before exams, comes out with 98%.

So yeah, some bs, some are just scary smart.

I probably did about 6-20 hours per week total (depending on HW and assigns, but almost no 'study/revision' until exams), and got 97.15, so I don't really know if people count that as a lot or not much.

I don't know what I would have achieved with more study; I didn't study in the holidays before trials or HSC itself, only started about 2 days before each set of exams but studied pretty full on most of the time during that period though (my HSC was spread over 2 weeks, probably wasted 4.5 days I think).

However, I guess i had worked hard for assessments and rankings through the year, and that really helped, and I had my english essays mostly finished before HSC (probably another 5 hours of work was required on each one, then probably 2 hours to memorise each).

i guess cos in year 10 i did little to no homework. i remember when i did my maths homework everynight, i did well in my exams.. then i just stopped and i dropped and failed miserably.
but jeez, no study until exams? :/ sup, good study methods? lol
