im sure this must be asked every yr

if u were an idiot and had no idea that u might like to consider medicine until last weekend and realised that the UMAT was a mandatory test that needed to be sat in july, is there anyway into undergrad medicine for next yr or will i hav to wait it out and sit UMAT next yr?

I know that u can complete a degree then attempt to get into post grad med but id kill to get into an undergrad coruse- doesnt matter where.
My UAI im hoping will be fairly strong- maybe not 99 though

so yea are my chances of med next yr 0?

honestly i had never really considered med before and had no idea reali about the UMAT. My skool never told us or anything. Please dont reply telling me how stupid i am- i already know that!

Damns. I think you might have to wait till next year...

However, there are UMAT exams overseas in Asia... Otherwise, I'm pretty sure UMAT is finalized...

im real bummed now ey.

Dunno y but ive got this sudden urge that id like to get into medicine. Just looking through the UAC nothing else really interests me like med does. I know its competetive and all and even if i sat the UMAT theres a good chance i may not have got in, but still...now i cant even apply. Well cant really blame anyone but myself, i should have researched this stuff months ago.

i wonder if anyone who missed UMAt has been admited in past. I mean i have 6 yrs worth of work that i can show the unis, ive worked really hard during high skool and i enjoy studying and all.

Dunno doubt theres any chance though

nope, sorry mate. UMAT is just the once a year and it's a requirement for most of the unis - HOWEVER, have you looked at some of the private unis (Bond in QLD, Notre Dame in WA) and JCU that don't use UMAT? you might be able to just scrape in with their application periods.

just be aware that once you start at one uni they make it very difficult (impossible, i think) to transfer to another uni.

You need UMAT for bond, Notre Dame is post grad in WA and Sydney, for JCU they only take interstaters with an OP1 or 99+ equiv because they don't use UMAT, applications are closing soon for JCU.

Cookie182: Mate your not the only one i heard a few gasps and whispers at open day med lectures when people found out UMAT was required.

Looks like you'll have to wait for next year, if u get a high uai, deffer a back-up course/take a GAP year, if you dont look at doing post-grad year or try to boost ur marks by getting a good GPA in a uni course and try again in the subsequent year.

Also med is the last resort if you don't know what to do, this is a life long career and not something that you decide to do other night, i highly stress you research medicine and attend open days and lectures next year. If your in it for the money or to help people in general ways there are other career options.

ooh, apologies! i saw Bond is part of the UMAT consortium, but didn't see Notre Dame - does it use the UMAT but it's not part of the consortium somehow?

Bad Idea. ;)

If you do a science degree next year, and do UMAT next year, the uni's will use your performace as a first year (and UAI) to decide whether to accept you. :p

It's not too bad - as a school leaver you get to apply to more med schools (and if the thread starter's in vic, monash only takes people without a tertiary record).

obviously, if you are just going to be bumming around, not the best option. If you do something constructive with your time/figure out if you really want to do med, might be worth it...

yea well i might enrol in medicinal chemistry or another science related degree and see where i go from there. I realise that medicine requires the ultimate commitment more then any other discipline. Ive always had an interest in the human body and the way it works, especially surgery but i never really considered actually being a doctor (i guess i just thought my marks would never be high enough). The money is the last thing im thinking about; if iwant money i might as well just do B comm/ B laws.

anyways thanxs everyone who answered.

Notre Dame is post-grad, it uses GAMSAT and interview. They don't use UMAT at all.

fuck, my powers of observation are useless - i just noted you already said it was postgrad. i only assumed it was undergrad because the students i've met from Broome all look too young to already have degrees! ha.

Almost. Yes it does require a LOT of commitment but I'd hesitate to say there aren't other people working their butts off in other disciplines just as hard :)
