hey guys, just not sure whether i've done this question right.


[SIZE=8. Hydrogen reacts with chlorine gas. Write a balanced equation for this reaction. If 3 litres of hydrogen gas is mixed with 2 litres of chlorine gas an allowed to react determine the gas in excess and hence determine the volume of gas produced. ** Now determine the volume of gases following the completion of the reaction computing the left over gas as well.SIZE]

H2(g) + Cl2(g) → 2HCl(g)

Molar ratio of H2 to Cl2 is 1:1, so hydrogen is in excess. Molar ratio of H2 to Cl2 to HCl is 1:1:2, so 2 litres of HCl will be produced.

So in total, after the reaction has occured, you'd have 2 litres of HCl + 1 litre of excess H2 = 5 litres of gas.

Just clarifying, the volume of gas produced would be 4L because molar ratio of HCl to Hydrogen/chlorine gas is 2:1, so we multiply 2L x 2 to get 4L of HCl gas produced.

Then there would be 1L of hydrogen gas left + the 4L of HCl, which equals 5L.
