Probably Galileo Galilei (last name spelling right? lol) - The Father of Modern Physics. Why do you ask? :).

Newton , hands down. You dont look at who is the best in the area , you look at who founded it/began it.

Newton wasn't the founder of Physics, but I agree that he is the most important in the history of it.

Einstein owed a lot to the likes of Newton though.

Ed Witten!!! Na, he is very important in physics right now but i reckon that Issac Newton is probably the most important figure in physics in the past, if it wasnot for physics, then we would not have that wonderful branch of mathematics CALCULUS (Although this is not completely true as Leibniz discovered calculus at roughly the same time as Newton).

Einstein also was an important person in physics as he developed a new way of experimentation (Kinda) called the thought experiment and developed the notion that gravity is the curvature of space-time.

I don't really think there's a "most" important physicist since all the info/theories is built on each other. i.e. Einstein wouldn't have come up with special relativity without Newton or Galileo etc.

However I think the smartest one would be Einstein cause he's able to throw away all assumptions the world has set on people and look at the truth.
