i recently watched "the shawshank redemption" and i was mesmerised, and have seen it three times more since. i got the dvd for christmas, initially thinking it'll be average, but it is my second favourite after "Raise Your Voice" (yes- with hilary duff- go watch it before you hold any bad opinions, lol)

supposedly, "shawshank" was a box office failure, but was very successful on video. Go watch it. that is my all time favourite underrated movie.
its rated second best movie of all time on www.imdb.com so no , its not underrated

"shawshank" is anything but overrated! great acting, great storyline, great directing - and obviously a lot of people would agree considering it got nominated for seven academy awards...

so watch it again, i wouldn't mind.

but, then again, you and i have completly opposite tastes. i woudn't even bother watching 'get carter'. however i really love watching comedians at Comedy Festivals.

i love tim robbins!
i wasn't criticising the movie (though there is definitely room for that - i seem to like it a little less than most)
my point was that the movie is close to universally adored
the merits of the film are academic - it gets rated very highly

The problem is that movies appeal to different people in different ways.

Howerber, I reckon these movies are underrated- The Burbs, O Brother Where Art Thou, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Down Periscope (man I love that movie)

Shawshank, along with Rings: Return of the King, are probably the 2 most overrated movies ever made.

Titanic is grossly overrated by some and unjustly underrated by others.

Barry Lyndon is quite underrated as well.

I agree on Titanic. It's not the best film ever made but it's still an impressive achievement. I think it's unfairly maligned by a lot of people.

in a critical context, barry lyndon is underrated

it's probably the most ignored kubrick movie
