Hi Everyone.

I joined this community because it seems like a really nice friendly group with helpful people :D. Anyways...

Recently my parents have decided that we were to move to Sydney from where I am living now which is a little town on the Murray known as Albury. I go to a private school called Scots School Albury. My parents have decided that I am also to go into a selective school, which is a pretty daunting prospect as I've only ever lived in small places and gone to small schools. My results look fairly good for a year 8 student but I'm not sure if it's enough. For entry into a year 9 selective school could anyone tell me if this is enough?

From my school reports:

Maths- A (92%)
English- B (84% :/)
History- A (91%)
Science- A (94%)
French - B (83%)
PDHPE - B (83%)
Art- C (74%) Can't draw for shit...
Music A
Technology- B
Geography - B (84%)

Naplan

Maths- Band 8 (Top triangle thing)
Writing- Band 6
Grammar and Punctuation- Band 8
Reading- Band 8
Spelling- Band 8

Extra Curricular Shenanigans

School band B flats
Soccer Team
Debating team
School Prefect Year 6 (Primary)
Awards in various subjects

From this information could anyone suggest what selective schools I have a chance of making. I realise that there might not be placement at a lot of schools but I'm hopefull :D. I also hear that there are 14 vacancies for grade 9 next year for James Ruse but it seems that schools pretty high up in terms of results and what nots so I'm not sure if I'm going make it..

Anyways Thanks in advance :D

Edit: Forgot to add that I got in top ten in the first semester this year and top boy.

Your results are looking pretty good! However that can't really determine how good you are compared to selective school kids as getting a 95% at rank 200 school for example, isn't necessarily the same as getting a 95% at James Ruse =)

I suggest applying to as many selective schools as you can that are close to your area.

Yeah that was what I was worried about. The thing is I live basically in a rural area so the closest would be like Melbourne lol. In Sydney I've applied for 4 different schools (not really sure which ones as parents organised :p). Hopefully I'm lucky enough to get in :/

Well, I meant like 'your area' as in the area in Sydney you are moving to haha :p Good luck though!

I know the school you go to hah. They had a killer 2011 class, one of their best HSC cohorts in awhile last year.

Your results are pretty good to be considered for a selective and you have some extra curriculars, it just depends what things the school weighs most because some selectives have entrance exams. And also James Ruse is pretty ambitious (it being number 1), you may have better luck with those that weight extracurriculars more like Sydney Boys etc.

Are your whole family moving to the city or are you going to move up with rellies? Oh and it'd be good if you got in, Scots is ridiculously expensive imho Selectives are the top schools of the state, and like no fees practically :D

Good luck with it all!

All depends on what schools you are trying out for.

Normally, one would argue it is easier to get into a lower ranked selective school compared to a higher ranked one but there's always exceptions.

Your report, NAPLAN and extra-cirriculars all look solid.

Entry into Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 (around 3 to 5 student spots maybe?) usually have much less vacant places compared to Entry to Year 11 (around 10 to 20 student spots maybe?) but it varies between schools.

Definitely consider the amount of vacancies for entry as a younger entrant. I don't really think many selective schools have huge vacancies so weigh out the opportunities. By all means try out for as many as you can to see how where you place.

Are there any selective schools in your area? I know Kooringal High in Wagga Wagga is partially selective, but that is probably a little far to travel.

Ya, it depends in which schools you apply for + the other applicants too. They may have more outstanding results, so you never know.

But cool report btw.

Lol @ Kooringal High suggestion, also if any recommends Yanco Ag. I know it's (recently) academically partial now, but I wonder how many years it'll be for that to bolster their school rank. Nothing against Kooringal, know lovely people there but if OP's looking for a better ranking and more academically selective school from their current one, they would be looking at city selectives. Op's school is far better than any of the out of Sydney selective or even some of the in city partial selectives (like Tempe, but I think OP's school is not too far below Mac Fields). OP would be far better staying at their current school which is actually fairly well ranked (it's top 150), even going to the close by comprehensive has better ranks than Yanco or Kooringal typically.

But to OP, you can get good academic results no matter what school you're at, I mean it's down to you. And your school you have plenty of previous 99ers to look to, I mean 3 people got over 99 there last year.
