Hello guys,

I did a topic test on Chemical Monitoring and Management and a question came up to name this compound:

CH2-CH2-CH=CH-CH3
|
CH3

I named it 2-Hexene but the teacher said its 1-Methyl-3-Pentene. But I know her answer is wrong, 4 science teachers have backed me up but she won't accept it.

How can I prove her wrong? ( I need the mark so I can come 1st)

Cheers,
Ami

definitely 2-hexene, as long as what youve drawn is correct

because you name according to the longest carbon chain

there's no such thing as 1-Methyl-3-Pentene is there? 3-Methyl-1-Pentene, yes, but a quick google serch supports my claim

i dont know how you would go about this but that etacher sounds extremelya rrogant - take it up with the science co-ordinator, and if nothin happens, then the curriculum co-ordinator. Pu it in writing, along with supporting evidence from websites and those teachers you mention.

thanks man.

I told her that 1-Methyl-2-Pentene doesnt exist. She is like "I don't care...Its naming practice".

Thanks,
Ami

your best bet is get the other teachers to harrass her. Did anyone else complain?
If she needs more conclusive proof then look through some past papers to see if you can find a similar question. Or at least, ask her to give a detailed explanation and then you go and ridicule it!

2-hexene

Get everyone to complain to her and get other teachers to harass her.

If that doesn't work, try speaking to your science coordinator :)

Cool. Our teachers insist on alk-2-ene for some reason.
Because it keeps the position number and functional group together so when there are multiple functional groups it is easier to determine the structure.
