i can tell you some household bases though?

cloudy ammonia
washing soda (sodium carbonate)
antacid tablets (calcium carbonate or magnesium hydroxide)
oven/drain cleaners (sodium hydroxide)
lime for making mortar
garden lime (calcium carbonate)

im not too sure about 'naturally occuring' bases though.

the syllabus dot point point:

"Identify data, gather and process information from secondary sources to identify examples of naturally occurring acids and bases and their chemical composition."

i am okay with acids but i am having trouble fining out about bases.

acids:
* acetic/ethanoic acid
* citric (found in lemons, citris fruits)
* vitamin c/ascorbic acid (found in fruits and vegatables)
* tartaric acid (found in grapes)
* dilute hcl (found in gastric juices)

bases:
* ?!

this dot pt has got me
we've only ever had to learn naturally occurring acids.
unless i wasnt listening in class?

/edit
i would still say it's:
* cloudy ammonia
* washing soda (sodium carbonate)
* antacid tablets (calcium carbonate or magnesium hydroxide)
* oven/drain cleaners (sodium hydroxide)
* lime for making mortar
* garden lime (calcium carbonate)

or at least the chemicals in the brackets, as they are naturally occurring.

e.g. garden lime, calcium carbonate

isnt saltpetre potassium nitrate ?

EDIT:
and im pretty sure ammonia is not one of the major natural occuring bases, infact it is extremely rare to occur naturally, usually by microscopic decomposition and transformations in the soil.

for this point i think i said that naturally occuring soluble bases are extremely rare relative 2 the acids. Most of these are produced by biological processes in living things ( nero has a list of them above) and are mainly in the forms of HCO3 + and CO3 2+ ions, Our blood is slightly basic. On the otherhand naturally occuring solid bases are quite common, including calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate and many others found in rocks like limestone etc etc.

EDIT EDIT: actually nero, alot of the substances on ur list are not naturally occuring

I had an assignment on naturally occurring acids and bases and i used the rotting fish one and something else but i cant really remember what it was.
I got good marks for it so it must have been right.

Would water (H2O) satisfy for a naturally occuring base, as it can act as a base according to Bronsted-Lowry

Here are some of the uses of acids as food additives Stezzah

Acetic Acid
E260
Processed Cheese
Acetic Acid is used to provide:
• A sour taste in food products
• Prevent enzymatic browning by denaturing enzymes eg Philli-Cheese
• Used to create a sour taste within foods
• Used to create esters within some food products such as wines and vinegars.

Malic Acid
E296
Packet Spaghetti Sauce Mixes
Used to make a food have a sharper and tangy taste such as those within potato chips labelled “Salt and Tangy” contain high levels of Malic acid to create this flavour.

Hope that helps with your hmwk see you on monday : )

h20 as a base...Bronsted-Lowry
i'd say yes it could but i think you'd be better off using other ones, and if do use h20 say its because of Bronsted-Lowry
