Sure there would have been many amongst them who accepted and followed Hitlers regime, but I guess half the problem now is proving who did what under order, or under sufferance.
But if, as you say, those SS members chose to be in the SS and therefore took on the responsibility of carrying out war atrocities without hesitation...then they should be persecuted, be it 2 years after the war or 60 years.

Anyone who's saying they were under orders, afaik the SS were hand picked as the racially superior, and you chose to accept the promotion from the regular army/SA to the SS, undoubtedly there would have at least been many rumours that it was the SS who carried out the dirtiest of the Nazi's work, and they chose to take the promotion anyway.

they didnt "chose" they couldnt refuse to join otherwise they would have been killed. I say why are the jews picked on all the time? lol answers that question!

No way. The SS knew exactly what they were doing, and certainly should be punished for it. If they were a bunch of regular German soldiers following orders some leniancy could be applied, but not for the SS.

No, wrong, incorrect. It doesn't matter who they are or what reasons they had for what they did. If they committed a crime then then they should be punished just as severely as anyone else who commits the same crime. To even suggest otherwise would be as senseless to say something like 'yeah I know 2 + 1 = 3 but it's not the same as 1 + 2 = 3 since the order in which the terms are written on the LHS is different.'
