Not sure if this is the right place but I need some help with a question in my Ext 1 Math Homework. Our teacher gave us a whole exercise of homework but unfortunately didn't explain half of it.

Question: The remainder is 89 when is divided by x-3, and the remainder is -3 when P(x) is divided by x+1. Find the values of a and b ?

I'll try that now I previously tried using remainder theorem to get two simultaneous equations but the solutions I got didn't match the ones in the textbook.

I can't believe i didn't see that i could eliminate a variable even though i got those top two equations.
