Hey, I was just wondering if a Bachelor of Commerce or Marketing and Media requires Advanced Mathematics. I am currently doing standard maths but want to pursue business at Macquarie Uni, are there any ways I could get into the course if Adv Maths is required? Also, will I still have a chance to get in with an ATAR below-guaranteed entry if it does happen? And are there any suggestions for courses that require a lower ATAR related to business? Thanks.

First, MQ treats relevant subjects as assumed knowledge rather than prerequisites, meaning that you can still receive an offer for a particular degree even if you have not taken the relevant subject (as long as you meet the selection rank requirement). Should this be the case, MQ recommends that you take a mathematics or quantitative methods elective unit in your first year.

In terms of the specific degrees that you are interested in, the Bachelor of Commerce lists different levels of HSC maths subjects as assumed knowledge, depending on the major(s) that you are interested in. MQ lists Mathematics Standard 2 as assumed knowledge for the following majors:
  • Accounting
  • Business Information Systems
  • Cyber Security Governance
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Human Resource Management
  • International Business
  • Management
  • Marketing and Consumer Insights
  • Marketing Management
Mathematics Advanced is treated as assumed knowledge for the following majors:
  • Business Analytics
  • Economics
  • Finance
If you do not intend to study any of these three majors, then you essentially have nothing to worry about other than maximising your ATAR to maximise your chances of receiving an offer.

On the other hand, only Mathematics Standard 2 is treated as assumed knowledge for the Bachelor of Marketing and Media.

With that being said, there is a considerable difference in selection rank requirement between the Bachelor of Commerce and the Bachelor of Marketing and Media, the former being 80 and the latter being 93. The Bachelor of Commerce is therefore easier to be admitted into than the Bachelor of Marketing and Media.

In terms of the focus of each degree, the Bachelor of Marketing and Media focuses strictly on marketing, whereas the Bachelor of Commerce provides more general knowledge of different business fields in addition to the chosen major(s). In deciding between the two degrees, you should therefore consider whether your goal is to work in marketing specifically. If so, you should consider whether a more comprehensive Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Marketing Management, or a more specific Bachelor of Marketing and Media would be better for you. However, if you are not interested in studying marketing, then you should study a Bachelor of Commerce since there is a multitude of specialisations that you can choose from.

I hope this helps! 😄

If it helps, I'm doing a bachelor of commerce, business analytics major at MQ (which is supposed to be the "hardest" major in the course), they said on the website I needed extension maths "assumed knowledge". I went in with standard maths. (MQ doesn't do prereqs, they'll let you in regardless if the maths in high school you did was standard maths or advanced or whatever else. Assumed knowledge is a recommendation basically, and is not a condition to enter the uni). I am now doing third-year units and honestly, we barely calculate anything anyways because softwares do it for us, all the calculations we do are basic things that standard maths knowledge will easily get you through. You definitely don't need advanced maths for MMC, or commerce for that matter (unless you major in finance, then having advanced maths may be helpful). If you end up doing a bachelor of commerce, the only struggle you might have is in the fist year core finance unit, that unit is not tricky maths-wise, but it is tricky trying to understand the concepts a bit, For that unit, I suggest always watching every lecture, attend every class, and always, always get help from your tutor, and you'll do fine.

Check out the ATAR bonus points calculator at MQ as well if you're worried about your ATAR. As for lower ATAR requirements, WSU has an atar requirement of 70 for business, both unis will probably let you in anyways, so don't worry too much about it.

Hope this helps. All the best for the upcoming trials/HSC!
