this is what i have put together, mainly for watching vids/dvd, CAD and some games....with the possibility of a tv tuner card being put in at a later date.

any reccomendations on this setup or any alternate parts to use?

I got fairly similar specs to you except that i have a 7800GT with an AMD 3500+ which runs really smoothly and is great for games. 6600GT is a good choice though. Go for a 19'' LCD, it's way better. I got one for under $300 and it's great.

hmmm :\ depending on how much CAD work/gaming you're gunna do ... maybe spend a bit more on the video card?

my 6800gs was only like $295 from msy

I'd go for extra RAM, and get normal DDR ram (not DDR2). An extra 512mb will be useful for CAD work and will be nice when running games.

Other than that - if you want to shell out more, why not a better graphics card? 6600GT is end of the line for that series. (Though I hear it's still a fantastic card)

Also.. why are you getting a silver monitor with a black case? :S

hmm i just upgraded from my 4400mx to the 6600GT (AGP) by extremevision.
I only got agp slot because it's an old system and sadly 6600GT is sorta already over the borderline of transfer rate using AGP, so basically they just have to underclock the graphics card ram by 100mhz.

costed me $205 straight from the import guy, well not really.
Theres a guy at work who has a friend that sells things for lower price than usual, yep it's nice to have connections lol.

It's comical though comparing just the physical size of the card (the old 4400 & the new 6600). the old cards like 1/3 of the size. lol

it's like having a new pair of eyes in games, like pumping up the resolution and quality from 640x480 lol! to like 1280x1024.

I also got an extra 512 ddr400 ram, it's only running at 333 tho cos of my older ram.

This ram costed me $60.

Extra ram really helps you open multiple applications at once with less lag and everything just runs fast because you wont be using much virtual memory.

That Mobo only has Dual-Channel DDR slots, so imo you should get a 1GB stick of RAM so you have some room for upgrades. otherwise in future you'll have to replace a 512 stick with a 1gb stick, then you'll have nothing to do with the spare 512!
Also, i agree with a 19" LCD. The difference really is impressive. Especially for what you want the computer for.

DDR2 isn't just overkill, it's incompatible since AM2 isn't officially out yet.

You should always try to get DDR RAM in pairs. It not only activates dual channel, effectively doubling bandwidth, it also reduces latency.
