ScienceDaily (June 12, 2009) — The element 112, discovered at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (Centre for Heavy Ion Research) in Darmstadt, has been officially recognized as a new element by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). IUPAC confirmed the recognition of element 112 in an official letter to the head of the discovering team, Professor Sigurd Hofmann. The letter furthermore asks the discoverers to propose a name for the new element.

BERLIN (Reuters) - A new, superheavy chemical element numbered 112 will soon be officially included in the periodic table, German researchers said.

A team in the southwest German city of Darmstadt first produced 112 in 1996 by firing charged zinc atoms through a 120-meter-long particle accelerator to hit a lead target.

"The new element is approximately 277 times heavier than hydrogen, making it the heaviest element in the periodic table," the scientists at the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research said in a statement late on Wednesday.

The zinc and lead nuclei were fused to form the nucleus of the new element, also known as Ununbium, Latin for 112.

This is new even though element 112 was already discovered in 1996 and only now is recognised as an official element?
But as the mass numbers increase the stability of such atoms decrease in stability and decay in a very short time period and there isn't much point giving them their own name other than their current Latin names.

Usually a lab claims that they've discovered a new element. If the results cannot be reproduced elsewhere then it isn't really "discovered".

Im guessing it took a while for other labs around the world to reproduce what they've done.

But as the mass numbers increase the stability of such atoms decrease in stability and decay in a very short time period and there isn't much point giving them their own name other than their current Latin names.

If i remember, some Physicists have predicted that a "zone of stability" exists further out in the periodic table.

Its quite interesting, they also predicted that were would be another series taken out much like the Actinides and Lanthanides.
