Hey guys, I have got no offer for accommodation and am first year law/arts. I guess its looking like I may end up at the rex. I was really looking faward to making new friends, is this going to seriously get in the way of that? I'm not a social retard but I'm relatively shy. Am I completely screwed?

Im sure it wont be too hard to find some people to be friends with :). There seem to be lots of people in the same position as you. Just get out there and make sure you meet people at various social events. .... and don't worry, im a shy person too (not really looking forward to that first day when i know nobody :S)

I think im in the same position, still waiting for my accom offer, i got that email today as well.

oh well id rather be in the rex then in some share house any day.

not sure how it will work for meals and study, most good hotels only have a pin sized desk. and im pretty sure i cant afford to eat out 3 meals a day.

Pretty sure the last time they had people in the Rex they came over to Fenner to cook/socialise/do laudry etc because it is literally across the road. So you'll probly end up making friends at Fenner.

Join Deb Soc, they are pretty active society and you should meet people. Don't be afraid to walk up to strangers.

Also, university isn't the only place to meet people in Canberra. Take a course in something you are interested in. Socialness won't been thrown in your face but you can choose a good life.

You might not end up in Rex, but may end up living with current students in their house or apartment, this is the email I got from ANU today – asking for help to give new students accommodation.

Dear ANU student,

The Students' Association has been asked to contact you by the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Students), Professor Elizabeth Deane.

I am writing to ask for your help to provide accommodation for new ANU students. We need to know if you have a spare room to rent in your home or share-house that could be offered to a fellow student.

The University is experiencing unprecedented demand for accommodation. Even though new accommodation has been built and everything is being done to find alternate off-campus accommodation around Canberra, we still cannot meet student demand for housing.

If you have a room to rent in your share house, apartment or home - or soon may have - please urgently post a free classified advertisement at ANU - University Accommodation Services - UAS University Accommodation Services will alert students to this information.

Please help if you can. Many thanks from the Students' Association and our new peers.

Best regards,

Tully Fletcher
President
ANU Students' Association

ANU have this problem every year and the reason is, they guarantee first years accommodation, but don’t give first years priority (they say they do, but obviously don’t) many later year students already have an accommodation place on campus, I’m 2nd year and even got offered a accommodation place (didn’t take it), this just shows that 1st years are not put 1st.

ANU shouldn’t make this guarantee if they cannot stick to it or don’t put 1st years as a priority, I had this problem last year, I only knew a few days before Uni where I would be living, and after 6 weeks I left the accommodation as it was terrible and got my own place, it’s obvious they don’t learn.

Good luck to all those waiting for accommodation.

And try not to let this put a damper on going to ANU, it’s a great Uni, it’s just the Accommodation Services area that hasn’t got a clue.

I can understand not giving 1st years absolute priority over later years, because if you did that the on-campus population could just end up completely skewed towards 1st years with too few later year students for a healthy balance.

Also the way I read that email is not that ANU will start placing people in houses but rather they'll tell everyone to look at the noticeboard and consider withdrawing their UAS application and renting privately instead.

To a degree but I think realistically the reason there is such a massive shortfall this year is the governments changes to youth allowance - not as many people are deferring so they've got the people who deferred in '08 plus pretty much all the '09ers as compared to previous years where more people have deferred. And I don't think it's fair to blame accommodation services entirely, ANU has obviously seen that there will be a shortfall in the future, hence the construction of the Laurus wing and UniLodge3 but couldn't stop it because the youth allowance changes were made so recently. It was fairly inevitable.

Well of course, if they actually placed people into other people’s apartments then they would still have to provide all the on campus stuff - which would be hard to do, by getting other students to advertise then they don’t need to do that.

It’s a bit desperate and very un-organised. I mean, why has it even been left so late? They know in late 2009 how many places at Uni they will offer people, they know how many first year places will be offered at ANU, they must have a general idea of how many people will need accommodation. It happens every year – not just because of the youth allowance, this happened last year and the year before. Then there is a big rush at the last minute.

I understand a balance is required, but don’t offer a guarantee and tell 1st years that they get priority (which is what the accommodation site says) if they cannot stick to it.

The Accommodation Services are completely useless and offer very little help in my opinion, they expect some students – some who will be moving out of home for the first time, to find out only days before where they will be living, it’s a big thing and the UAS doesn’t seem to understand it. Last year one of my friends only found out on the Saturday where he would be living, with the first week of Uni starting on the Monday.

It can make a big difference on peoples experience of uni and can set off their whole year, I know 3 other 1st years who were shoved into Toad Hall me with, 2 ended up quitting ANU altogether after a few weeks and the other 1 ending up leaving the accommodation and sorting out other arrangements.

The problem is, they make this guarantee and can’t keep to it. In 2008 they said the same thing, not enough beds, new place being built next year so will solve the problem... it didn’t, they said the same last year and the same this year.

You may think it’s ok to put a 1st year kid into a hotel, but even if it’s affiliated with a certain college, they will still miss out.

It’s ridiculous.

I just think it gives a really bad impression of ANU, which is a shame as it’s a great University.

Thanks for the great posts... You've all very much articulated my frustrations!

I wish I'd known this before turning down other university offers.

In addition, a lot (not all) of the staff I've spoken to at the accommodation office have this shocked demeanor when I raise my voice at them and say such things as "the university reserves a right to put students in any accommodation they deem approporiate" uh hello it is not appropriate for a first year moving cities to be living in random appartments or hotels for months on end.

It is kind of a disclaimer in the 'university approved' thing but while I agree that it isnt the best possible situation and perhaps slightly inappropriate, ANU has been getting mroe popular and more first years do rely on the guarantee each year. I can't help but feel bad for the people who work at the UAS and have to put up with kids ringing every five minutes freaking out about a situation they cant do anything about. As scary as it is, you're still going to get a place to live, you will get better accommodation as soon as they can, you're still into uni, the HSC is over and as long as you have a positive mindset you will still enjoy uni and o week.

I wonder if its all those university rankings that are making ANU more popular? I know of people who went to ANU JUST because it is ranked #1 on some internet sites...

ANU's been #1 for a while though...maybe more disillusionment with conceited Sydney unis? The ranking does make ANU more attractive to international students though.

Well I definitely took notice of those rankings, but that's just me. Can't help but feel a little smug that its so high up lol as silly as it sounds.. Regarding accommodation, true, it'll be fine I'm sure with a positive mindset but one thing I worry about is O week.

If you're living in Johns etc no doubt you'd meet people and go along with them to the parties and then your social life has just begun and you go from there, if your at a hotel its somewhat awkward.

Ergh ditto thanks for articulating my frustrations... why say 'apply for accom now', 'first years get preference' bullshit if they don't stick to it?! And right now it's kind of too late to just go to another university because they've left us hanging for too long now. And my backup plan - learn French/work part time then go to Haiti and help with rebuilding - is good but I'd still rather go to uni now. Also I feel like sticking it to them and making them realise they have to get these things sorted and that messing already nervous and moving out of home first years isn't very helpful.

Yeah. I've seen two later undergraduate students on this forum alone who have got accommodation already, proving we're not first preference.

Okay, new plan: the first person to hear about getting into the Rex makes a thread so we all know who's where and go out of our way to be social so we can band together on our own at least... Though I'm not a social retard, I can be shy.

Maybe we should make t-shirts :p

Lol that's a good idea. It would be okay I guess if there was like 50 or so people staying in one hotel :)

Don't be so sure that we're staying at a hotel (the REX). I read some previous threads from 2008 and 2009 and ANU were sending people to stay at places like The Australian Hotel Management College or something like that. I think they even offered some people random motels, not hotels, motels!
