how do you indicate flash backs and flashfowards?

im trying to make my short story start with part of the ending, flashback to how he got there and then flashfoward to continue the ending

I user 3 asterisks in the middle of the page to show a time-shift, setting-shift or flashback/forward cause thats how i was shown since year 9, ive never been told by a teacher that its wrong.

oh ok thanks.
i was told to change my tenses (past, future etc) but it seems abit risky. might confuse the marker or imply i cant use my tenses properly lol

Is it first or third person?
You could make it seem as if they are contemplating the past. Thats what I did.
