Well may you all say that if the answer is labor, it must have been a very silly question to begin with. But what has happened in the last two years, or six years that suddenly made those hapless liberals suddenly seem like the natural party of government? What radical change has swept through the ALP and or the opposition in those six years since Carr annihiliated Brodgen, where the NSW people said with incredible clarity "We believe labor would be better at governing NSW than the liberal party." I would suggest that there has been no radical change, I would suggest that NSW labor were doing no better six years ago and that the liberal party have not dramatically improved since then.
What we are witnessing today is not the most incompetent, hapless, immoral government NSW or any state has ever seen. Rather we are witnessing the oldest, most long serving government that any state has ever seen since the Queensland national party. Very few people anticipate a significant change for the better from a liberal government, rather they are just bored and tired of the same men doing the same jobs in the same way for so long and don't think the opposition would be much worse.
Such an approach however is dangerous and not in the interest of New South Wales. With the global credit crunch taking place NSW has suffered the worst of any state, being in significant debt allready. It now desperately relies upon funding from the Commonwealth, it desperately needs to cooperate with Canberra. A liberal state government is not going to cooperate easilly with Canberra, where issues of overlapping powers arise it will be bloody. Just when cooperation is crucial, you would elect within four years of each other strong adversaries to negotiate commonwealth funding in NSW. What idiosy.
