pre sure my english teacher went out of his way to making material and guide for senior classes that he apparently at times stays up to 9pm in the school and goes home at 11 on weekdays, some teachers are next level whereas some others dgaf and just copy paste shit from the textbook and yolo.

would still advocate for a payraise though, still a very hard job since its not really only education at this point and its also more of a welfare role tbh. even if the shitty teachers get more money for jackshit at least it rewards those teachers who go beyond their role the much needed boost.

yea I feel like firstly high school teachers should be payed a lot more. Since they have to specialise in a field eg. Chemistry. Where as primary school teachers learn more so to specialise in helping children learn.

But yea the problem is bad teachers, my chem teacher never taught us anything and it’s take a huge toll on my chemistry study. Science teachers should be payed the most but they should also make the route to becoming one more similar to medicine. That way not any person who has no idea what science is could become a science teacher.

They’re already doing that by making it compulsory to do master of teaching in your science course for teaching. And they’ve introduced an exam similar to the UCAT for science teachers getting scholarships, followed by a interview just like in medicine .
I had to do Abstract reasoning, verbal reasoning, emotional intelligence etc..

All of this would mean that future science teachers would be more competent and deserving of a high pay.

One study showed that 70% of top achieving science students considered a career in teaching but rejected it due to a lack of pay for the work put in. Many students who excel in academics also enjoy tutoring but don’t pursue the teaching career due to a lack of pay.

If the pay was increased more people would want to become science teachers. Hence you could implement the teaching “UCAT” and the “UCAT interview” to not just scholarships but becoming a science teacher. Combining this with the compulsory master of teaching course for science, would mean that much better teachers would be produced.

Also I think for a system of progression for their pay, a test would be conducted in which an examiner sits in your classroom and assesses your teaching. So science teachers who just write the textbook on a whiteboard and do nothing else can be spotted.


Science Teachers should also sit exams every 4 years or so, to make sure their knowledge in their chosen science field is up to scratch

Actually today we have something called LANTITE yeah it does its job but yeah I think it can be done better.

I actually like what UNSW did which is putting LANTITE before the actual placements. Should be somewhat effective.

No it is meant to see if you have the capabilitiy to navigate around high school activities.

Specificagent1 yeah you can so but it is meant to be done during your uni course after first year or around first year. Can be done anytime. If you want more search LANTITE on google and check ACER.

This is often harder when students have parents whose first language is not English, so do not have access to the support needed.

I saw an add at the KMART parking in Blacktown saying "Teachers get underpaid for giving their job 110, they deserve a pay-rise for the many talents they have."

When I was driving I was like holy hell I agree with this statement. I know there are people who have completely lost their jobs/business, but that does not invalidate the struggles and compromises not only in their career, but in their day to day life. Since I wasn't in a financially stable environment, I was not able to supply funds for tutoring and therefore solely relied on teachers and self-learning for understanding the syllabus of an array off difficult subjects. My teachers and I'm sure other teachers too stayed back after school underpinning the message "I don't get paid overtime for doing this, but I am doing this so you can succeed in not only my class, but in the HSC as well." It brings such respect towards teachers as they constantly compromise their quality time into ensuring student success, which is something I truly admire.

Then there's the period during lockdown, to which shows that teachers truly deserve more money for their broad range of talents they bring. To make an online class engaging. To make resources whether it be PowerPoints or even constructing custom made papers to do over the holidays, I can say it paid off given how I did in Chemistry today.

Thanks to all teachers, as they have not only helped me prepare for the HSC exams, but helped me become a better person in general.

hot take but why should PE teachers be paid the same as maths/science/english/hsie (even music/art) teachers who have to make legit lesson plans and dedicate a lot more time out of school... it's not like they have to even do marking or anything (apart from a small group of hsc pe students)

really? we have 60+ HSC pdhpe kids at our school
they also make lesson plans for 7-10 and mark a bunch of assignments

I think we can all agree on one thing though, it's absolutely bullshit that some teachers need to spend their OWN MONEY on purchasing educational materials or stationary because the school's aren't funded enough
