but the uai was never a percentage, it was a PERCENTILE =]
meaning, if u say a uai of 100 is a perfect score (here the criteria being that noone beat u!)
that will still apply to the atar, with 99.95 now being the 'perfect'

how wrong am i??
:bomb:

what im very confused with is why this atar thing seems to favour 'lower' achievers??? for eg: the uac table says that a 60 uai is a 64 point something atar while a 99 uai only jumps up by 0.05...

eh.
yeah, as someone said before, it seems like it's a really negative system for the high achievers, trying to make the crap people feel good about themselves but forgetting about the people who actually kick ass.

eh.
It doesn't favour anyone. It's a rank. The only way it would favour low achievers is if it ranked them higher than people who did better

I don't know if anyone realised, but only just found out NSW is the only state to adopt ATAR this year. Every other state except QLD will adopt from next year. Stupid hey? Might as well have kept the UAI and give the would be 100ers the ego of saying they had a perfect score.

They say it will have no effect but for 10ers(especially NSW students), it will be greatly disadvantaged because the UAI or ATAR cut off for universities all depend on demand for the course, but people from different state apply for the certain course in lets say USYD will effect the whole thing since it will mean that they will replace the "smart" NSW students since they have higher ATAR for their state

Also to those who say it disdvantages higher up students, nobody gives sbhit whether you get 99.85 or 99.9, and either way if you got 99.75+ you'll get the course cutoff easily.

Now I just need an OP to ATAR conversion and I'll be good...
i'm pretty sure that only NSW and ACT are adopting the ATAR this year. everyone else is doing it in 2010 and QLD will not have the ATAR system for awhile yet as it requires some sort of legislation change.

yup, you're right, this year is only NSW + ACT, then next year everyone else cept QLD because of:
The sunshine state's Overall Position system uses a ranking of one to 25 and altering it would require changes to state legislation, which are not expected to happen in 2009.

Well, if it helps anyone.

I'm currently doing the HSC this year, and i got a letter from UAC stating that the UAI has been dumped, and that ARTA is the new thing.

And that 99.95 is the highest ATAR you can get.

Re: NSW to dump UAI!

Its now been pulled for the other news site as well. Have any of you Year 12 students been "written too" or received anything about it? I guess not.
I got a letter in the mail on Friday I think, the 12th from the Board of Studies.

It is kind of confusing this whole thing. However from my understanding, it doesn't change much at with the UAI, the name has just changed is all.

"These changes have been introduced to achieve national consistency in the name and reporting of selection ranks... The rules for the ATAR are exactly the same as for the UAI. The scaling process will be the same, the rank order of students will be the same, and the same applicants will be selected for the same courses."
UAI ATAR
100.00 99.95
99.00 99.05
98.00 98.10
97.00 97.20
96.00 96.30
95.00 95.40
94.00 94.45
93.00 93.55
92.00 92.65
91.00 91.75
90.00 90.80
85.00 86.25
80.00 81.65
75.00 77.10
70.00 72.55
65.00 67.95
60.00 63.40
from UAC site.
Personally, though, I see this as pretty pointless.

Re: NSW to dump UAI!

^ The whole point of this amendment is to standardise the ranking system in all the states. Basically, they want a scaling system shared by all states (excluding Qld).
