Yes I totally agree with that! Nursing is NOT about only about showering people. Sure if you do aged care, you will be doing more showers and stuff. And it TOTALLY depends on what ward you work in!
That attitude you have is exactly why i didnt go straight into nursing when I left year 12. Mum was a nurse ages ago, when mos of the time all they did was bed pans and showering and stuff. But things have changed! Nurses are the ones who are with the patient all the time and often know mre about what the patient is going through and is there to stand up for the patients support.
Who do patients turn to when they want to talk to someone fi they're concerned? The nurse, coz they are there pretty much straight away to listen to the patient.
And acutally I think unless the mother is expecting a c-section or complications, the midwife is the only one needed to deliver the baby. The reason so many doctors order c-sections is to know when the baby is going to be delivered, so they can be there if there are complications, and it means less likelihood that the doctor will get taken to court for damages etc.
Why do you think they brough out the nurse practitioner? Coz they have a big bag of experience, and know pretty much what a doctor does. Just not with the huge HECS debt etc.
