In relation to OP's question, I am also interested in learning the violin, however is the teacher absolutely necessary? I currently have been playing piano for about 10 years now, and have played guitar for about a year. I also have good relative pitch and somewhat but not-so-perfect pitch.
Teacher is necessary, especially for the beginning stages of your violin learning. Also, because you already know all the notes, rhythm etc, it should
be easier to progress to a level where you will be able to self teach yourself.

Looking at a book will not teach you how to correctly execute a technique.

Wow. You're not joking are you?

As for strings, I use Dominant. Evah's are way too expensive for my liking.

Hey, muffin, concerti, chi..
Are any of you in SYO?
It's 233yo and I dont do SYO but Concerti does.

I prefer the sound of the violin :)

And this is jsut me but beginner/intermediate pieces on the piano
don't realy interest me whereas there are a few on the violin which
do haha

Actually, I prefer the sound of a raw cello over violin.

No, I acquired it through a family friend who requested that I play it as he can no longer play the violin.

Holy crap! Those beginner violins at Sydney String Centre go from a minimum of $395! I know it seems that I'm sort of procrastinating but does anyone know when the sales of musical instruments start?

Thanks.

Pertaining to her marks she's probably one of those going to Ivy League.

They never do. So, I'd suggest you start working and saving up.

Violin is very hard but it might become easier once you have acquired a good sense of pitch (ie knowing which note is played without seeing). And the younger you start, the better - your hearing deteriorates as you get older.

If the violin comes with a case, rosin, strings, bow etc, then $395 isnt all that bad for a student violin.

And yeah, instruments don't really go on sale unless the store is like closing down.

On the other hand though, you should be able to negotiate a price.
