hi everyone basically ive been really stressed cos i feel like i messed up my subject selections back in year 10 and i genuinely hate most of them. However im still doing pretty decently with all my ranks in top 10 except for math which is top 30. im also kinda stressed cos the subjects i take are pretty low scaling but i really wanna achieve an atar over 95. My schools ranked around 60-70 but the majority kids that take my subjects arent that bright so i doubt scaling will even help me. I was wondering if anyone personally took bad scaling subjects and was able to score an atar over 95? . i cant help but keep regretting i didnt take harder subjects cos i was scared theyd be too hard and nowi m genuinely bored out of my mind in most classes. the subjects i take for hsc are eng and math adv, bio, business, society and culture and visual arts. Im so stressed and so unmotivated someone pls help

Your last four subjects are on the lower-scaling side, so if you’re aiming for a 95+ ATAR, it might have been better to choose higher-scaling ones. But at this point, that’s out of your control, so the best thing you can do is maximise your marks. Aim for 90+ in all your subjects, especially English and Maths, since they have a strong impact on your ATAR. With strong marks across the board, you still have a solid shot at reaching your goal.

As for motivation, think about all the time you’ve spent studying—missing out on parties, turning down plans with friends, sacrificing so much just to get a good mark. Now, imagine ending up with an atar you’re not happy with, one that won't even get you to your desired course. Wouldn’t it feel like all those sacrifices were for nothing?

hey, i would also just like to add onto what academic_reaper said. yes it's better to have chosen higher scaling subjects to 'maximise your atar' but it's still possible to achieve a very high atar in the 90s with any combination subjects, especially with the subjects you have chosen. there have been countless people in the recent years achieving 97+ atars with both standard english and math and low ranking subjects like geography, SOR, pdhpe and so on. you just don't see it often because people don't usually take those subjects.

hope you're doing okay. keep pushing forward!
if you don't already, try getting at least 6-8 hours of sleep every night because that can be one of the factors contributing to your burn out :)

thank you for thatttt i just wish i didnt listen to everyone saying choose what u think u like or scaling doesnt matter, but knowing people have been able to achieve that with low scaling subjects makes me abit more relieved.

Yeah this is a common feeling that we've probably all gone through. I think it happens when things pile up and I just forget why it all matters. Like, I know ATAR and all that but I just lose the motivation and inspiration for my future. So I think it helps to just step back, reflect on your goals. What do you want to achieve? How will you get there? The ATAR is a steping stone for your plans, so plan your for your ATAR and never give up. Giving up once makes it easier to give up another time, or procrastinate another time, and then procrastination becomes a habit. And then it becomes too late to get the degree you want. Just think about what YOU WANT. If you don't want to do the work to get what you want, you will not get what you want.

Talk to your friends and take a day of. But after that, lock in. Because there are no excuses. We all have the power to get what we want, but sometimes the difficulties make us want to look back and take the other direction, but resist the urge to do less. Because if you do less, you will become less. I feel bored in my enterprise computing class, and what helps me is to think about my future. I just have to put up with this for this year, then I can get to the subject I like tomorow. Then the degree I want in a year. Will you let the monotomy bring you down?

On scaling;

Do not think too much about scaling, especially comparing to your school rank. Because no matter what school you come from, any ATAR is possible. The reason math/english advanced students get higher marks is not entirely scaling; The students that CAN do harder subjects (i.e talented in thos subjects already) do advanced subjects, and thus get higher marks. It seems to be from scaling because students that aren't as good at math/english do standard, and thus achieve less marks becuase of their LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING, not the scaling. It is the cohort that do these subjects that influence what marks they get, it appears to be the subject but it is the student.

Choosing what you like is quite risky, IMO. I chose subjects that'd boost my star up, since personally, l hate legal, bio and english, but these are the subjects l'm best at.
