That's what I wrote too. Observations compared with existing secondary sources to extend the reliability of the information from the dissection. I bullshitted part a) and just said observations of the lobes firstly without dissecting it, then slicing it once longitudinally or something into the hemisphere's or some crap.

Bleh.
I just said, "We dissected a mammalian brain and labelled it."

Our year never did a experiment so i just mentioned how we disected a mammalian sheep brain while comparing its structure to a labelled diagram of the Human Brain provided by the science department..then expanded on that...and the 7 marker...i mentioned the larynx, drew its strucuture, then the ear and how the transfer of sound energy through the ear detects varying frequencies of sound while also drawing a diagram of the ear, then how the hair cells in the organ of corti create nervous impulses through the auditory nerve to Wernicks area for intrepretation....but i didnt mention brocas area for speech...damn...lost a mark

The question didnt really ask about an experiement... It just said research or somthin but it didnt specifically say anythin bout an experiment..
I Jus crapped on bout how we gathered info from the net and text books to work out stuff... I couldnt remember any of the parts of the brain so probly lost quite a few makrs there :)

for the 7 marker, i wrote about how humans make sound (through larynx, as well as a sentence on clapping ) , then i said how the sound travels through air. then i described what the parts of the ear does from the outer ear to the organ of corti. then i talked about hair cells, and how they vibrate, making electrical signals

HERES WHERE I START TO BS.

i wasnt sure if we had to explain how the nerves transport messages (like, through repolarisation etc, then production of acetylcholine through synapes) then to the brain.

thats where i stopped. i wasnt sure if i needed to write about how the brain interprets it (i forgot which lobe controls hearing)

The question said

b)i) Descibe an investigation you conducted to distinguish parts of the brain and locate the regions involved in speech, sigh and sound perception.

Did the question really ask about which parts of the brain did what or did it ask you WHERE you found this infomation specifically.

i second this..but it never asked to specify the regions, its more about the process or procedure you used to gain information on these regions and parts of the brain. it didtn imply secondary or first hand investigation so you could do either... to stay on the safe side i mentioned of the secondary investigation of searching through various resources and then reinforcing this with the prac...so you werent restricted to the one investigation

(b)?

i don't think we did an experiment because lack of time towards the end of the year...

Conducting an investigation can either be defined as Doing an experiment or gathering data from viable sources (where u have to mention the URL of the site and its reliability) if you did one of these, you get the marks

Yes the sylabus thingy says that you must look at a model(me), disect or gather resources about the brain and the rest of the crap that goes on.

Communication = stupidest set of questions for a long time over all exam not too bad!

This years communication was so much easier then previous years. Which in a way is bad cos they wont really scale it as much. woot. bs'd my way through it. im so glad they didnt ask anything specific about action potentials cos i didnt learn/study that at all :)

Mmmm, I specifically stated "the main structures involved are larynx, ear and brain (specific regions of it)", yet I forgot to talk about the larynx. Do you think the examiners will consider the pressure during the exam and will be generous with me?

And to evaluate the brain exp. I talked about comparing the experiement with the use of coloured brain models that can be taken apart to clearly observe the specific regions of the brain etc - compare the relevance of the exp. And that the use of computer generated 3d visual images of the brain that can be rotatable etc. would prove that the brain exp. was limited in its relevance.

The use of secondary sources eg: identification chart of the brain and its specific regions had to be validated by professors or medical practioners etc.

oh u bloody noob mithril read teh question three times adn you'll understand it look like that part in your brain isnt functioning:p lol
i dont now i jsut wrote we asked specialists adn made notes adn named wierd things and sadi thats wat doctor nicole frank said from prince alfred hospital that was all rubish but im hopin the marker is noob and has no idea wat to say<grin>

so wat did you put for the 7 marker?? what was the content of your answer?
I wrote about the larynx producing sound and how vocal chords are used to create a range of sounds for effective communication. And the ear can perceive sounds and how the hair cells in the organ of Corti allows us to detect a range of sounds. Hopefully that gets 7 marks =)

Communication was wayyy easier then I thought it would be. So happy there wasn't much questions on the eye - I didn't study the eye much. =)

hmmm about hte larynx shortage bit...i dont think you will get the full marks..prob lose a mark or so, because it did say to refer to structures which yo udid, but didnt explain their use?

i doubt you had to provide the actual website in the investigation of the brai nquestion, you just had to sepcify that you selected specific brain related websites and all, and how data was cross referenced with various resources like textbooks

i structured it into 3 parts.

the vocal chords and larynx and voice box and how it vibrates n such, then i drew a diagram

the hearing of sound through the ear, cochlea, organ of corti, pinna, etc. and drew a diagram

the brain and wernickes area and brocas area and i drew a diagram

THEN i discussed what happens when these dont function normally so u cant produce sound and the need for hearing aids n shyt.

:D

why diagrams for the 7 marker?

I didn't do diagrams..do you have to explain with them? ahhh i wrote like 5 pages and that was it..why diagrams?

i wrote like 3.5 pages for the 7 mark one..
i just kept on bsing on about the ear- how the sound moves from the outer ear(pinna) and through to the ear osscile(middle) then to the cochlea (inner) where it reaches the organ of corti which has hairs absorb the sound..
for the larynx i wrote the vocal cords made up of cartillage and muscle make tiny vibrations to make the sounds
im hoping for 80+
for the 8 mark one i filled up the whole page like literally and asked another booklet and wrote like a page in that full of about natural selection, adaptation to environment and how the megafauna and some extinct animals became extinct..
really need bio to go well..it was the easiest exam ive done out of the previous
