Parthenai? (1 Viewer)

I was taught at school this term that they were the children on unmarried Spartan mothers and Spartan fathers. But I was just reading the Macquarie Ancient History guide, and it says they are the children of unmarried HELOT mothers and Spartan fathers.

Could anyone tell me which one is correct. If so, it would be much appreciated.

- Aristotle tells us both parents were Spartans, whilst Theopompous describes the Parthenai as offspring of Helot/Spartan parents.

- and if the Macquaries guide says its the Spartiate/Helot parentage, then I'd probably put my money on that one - seems like the more inferior status to me. Good luck for 08 dude!

Thanks for your reply. I was thinking the same, to trust the Macquarie guide more, and also because it seems to make more sense that they had Helot blood. The only thing about which I'm worried though, is that what if, say in my half-yearly, it asked aboput them, and I got penalised because I didn't write what I've been taught? I'm really confused.

Simple - fix it up with your teachers now - tell them this is what you found on websites / Macquarie Guide / (and if you can, look for another credible source i.e. book that says the same). That way, they'll either:

a) End up agreeing with you, so if you ever use it in an exam - you can remind them about it

b) They don't agree with you, in which case, just use what they taught you for the exam, but NOT for the HSC exam.

Thanks. The only thing is though, the teacher that I had this term has left school, and we're getting someone who will be new to the school.
