I've been looking at a few past HSC questions pre-2019 on the relevant modules to the new syllabus and I noticed a lot of them were wordy-type questions and very technical e.g. how cloud chambers work. Are these needed in the new syllabus?

i would say so. if you look at some of the 5-9 mark questions from the 2019 and 2020 papers, a lot of them are wordy and don't require any actual calculations. They want to know if you understand the concepts, not just if you know how to plug stuff into a formula.
