You gotta remember that in Bio shape usually relates to their function.

So leaves are flat and broad, therefore having the maximum surface area to absorb light for photosynthesis. Leaves are also thin allowing the sunlight to reach all layers of cells within.

As for "the distribution of tissues in them and their role" that is just referring to stomates, cuticle and epidermis etc...

i dont think stomates are tissues. The tissues you need to know are epidermis, mesophyll, xylem and phloem. Also desert plants have thorns to reduce surface area in order to minimise water loss.

There should be however, another syllabus dot point where you need to know about stomates. Something to do with transport system in plants.

The relationship between the shape of leaves and their role
Leaves have a broad, flat and thin shape which is important for their role of photosynthesis as this shape provides a large surface area so more light can be absorbed.

The relationship between the distribution of different tissues in the leaf and their role
  • stomates: are found in the upper or lower epidermis. Role is to exchange gases - oxygen and carbon dioxide.
  • xylem: are found in the veins, areas called vascular tissue. Role is to transport water and mineral ions up the plant from the roots to the leaves.
  • phloem: are found in the veins, also in areas called vascular tissue. Role is transport food and sugars around the plant, through veins.
  • palisade mesophyll: are found just below the upper epidermis. Is the main photosynthetic cell.
  • spongy mesophyll: is found between the palisade and lower epidermis.Role is to also photosynthesise. They are known as spongy as there is a lot of air space around them, so the gases can diffuse easily throughout the leaf.
  • epidermis:is found at the top and the bottom (the skin). 1. Produces waxy cuticle to reduce waer loss. 2. Transparent to allow light to enter.
A diagram of all these leaf tissues in detail would always help :)
and im sorry about any spelling/grammar errors above, I typed it all in a bit of a rush.
Hope it helps :)
