Hi, I was wondering if anyone who has done LAW104 in the past has a copy of the unit online and if they could send me a copy, the more recent the better, it would be really great :)

Law, Lawyers and Society is in Semester 2...

Hmm, are you one of those insufferable eager-beavers? :p

No, I am a second year who is being made to do it even though I did an intro course at UWS and I want to find out what is different about it and challenge the decision.

Ooh, I like a challenge.

You should see Maggie Liston in the Divison of Law. I'm sure she could get you last year's unit outline.

Or try contacting last year's convenor, Alex Reilly.

hey melsc,

I am in the same boat. I was also trying to seek an exemption for LAW 104 Law, Lawyers and Society. I came from UTS and I had completed the Business Law and Ethics course.

This course was/is approved by UNSW as a direct equivalent for Law, Lawyers and Society but not at Macq.

If possible, would you be able to let me know, how your situation plays out. Also what subject did you think was an equivalent of LAW 104.

Intro to law at UWS, although when I saw the unit outline I noticed that it included 'professional ethics' which was not in my course, but I found a course called 'legal ethics' which was only two credit points which might cover it. I will have to wait and see.

Last years unit outline is here http://www.law.mq.edu.au/html/staff/reilly/teaching_materials.htm

Good luck and I will let u know what happens

it was until yours truly screwed it up. you will note that the current version of transfer of credit tablehttp://www.law.unsw.edu.au/future_s...D_STANDING_COURSES_AT_OTHER_NSW_UNIS_2006.pdf that BLEthicshttp://www.handbook.uts.edu.au/subjects/79203.html is no longer the equivalent of LLShttp://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/courses/2007/LAWS6210.html at UNSW. this is because, after showing the associate dean (education) the content of the BLEthics course, it was clear that BLEthics is an entirely different animal from LLS.

the latter is more on professional conduct and responsibility, with a significant amount of legislation and case law. if i remember correctly, BLEthics is largely an introduction to business law course (which faculties of business everywhere seem to be so fond of), with 2 weeks of 'ethics' bunged on the end.

mel: i think you should be able to challenge the decision, or otherwise, negotiate to take another course in lieu. because it seems to me that the first part of LAW104 would entirely be a waste of time for you (viz. "a general introduction to the Macquarie law degree, the Australian legal system, and the core legal scholarship skills of research, essay writing and statutory interpretation"). the latter half, i think would be new (viz. "the role of lawyers and the legal profession within society through an analysis of the rules of legal practice, and a broader consideration of personal and professional ethics").

however, since MQ has a LAW518 - Legal Ethicshttp://handbook.mq.edu.au/unit.php?edition=2007&vid=20570 course (to satisfy admission requirements), the professional ethics/rules material covered in LAW104 would be, i imagine, superficial and not worth your time. food for thought. :)

from what i heard from the lecturer in charge, law104 half of it is an ethics course, law518 is not compulsery, the ethics part of the priestly 11 is covered in 104.

Thats what I thought, I am waiting on the co-ordinator of the course to get back to me as he told me he would look into it :)

LAW 518 is for those students, such as myself, who did not do LAW104. In fact, LAW104 did not exist when I was in first year.

I agree that you should be given an exemption if you take the 2 unit ethics course, and I would be surprised if they didn't give you this exemption. But note, I think LAW518 will only be running for the next couple years, so you'd have to fit it into your program within that time (which will require a waiver of a pre-req).

I have been informed that I must do Law104 and that the options I discussed are not apropriate. I don't see why but apparently if I email back they will let me know. I don't know if it differs for the others seeking exception but I doubt it. Good luck to the rest trying, I guess I will be fronting up for it....Just seems like a waste of time and that I am going to be soooo bored...
