Alicia Keys = mainstream artist.

Alicia started piano-playing at the age of 7. She attended the Manhatten's Professional Performing Arts High School majoring in Choir and rehearsed with vocal coach Conrad Robinson at the Harlem Police Athletic League Community center until at age 16. During this time, Alicia graduated as her high school valedictorian and was accepted to attend Columbia University. Conrad introduced Keys to his brother Jeff, Alicia's 'batman", who began searching for the right label.

Blah blah look where she is now.

If you're really aspiring to become famous and successful, do it! I believe in you! Just be determined etc. I'd admit Alicia Keys isn't fully out classical. She has a whole lot of jazz, soul and rnb in her, although she adds canonical music into her pieces, (a tad postmodern), as in breaking in her song to play Beethoven, or whatever.

Musicians with a classical background CAN enter the mainstream if they wanted. What's stopping them?

If you feel the music in Australia is crappy, then why don't you go and try to get it to the big time so you can replenish it?

Record labels signing obese 16 yr olds to be role models and therefore negating the number of contracts they can sign with talented musicians. There is no demand for classical music in the mainstream and as long as crappy shows like Aust. Idol continue to run the occurence of real talent and musicianship being signed will continue to fall.

Going back to Aust idol. What about Daniel. He has had training to make his voice what it is.

Daniel was a hotty though.
He wouldn't have gotten anywhere near the finals without his looks. He's actually a Con student, and the closest thing to a classical musician there. Even still, he felt that a departure from the Classical genre was the only way he could succeed in the competition, which is really sad.

If the media told society that they liked the music of say, Stockhausen, teenage girls would be buying albums of Stockhausen's music. If the media told society that Michael Smetanin (as an example) was "da Bomb" and his music was so "fully sick" and that he was "totally hot", then teenage girls would be all over him.

Those are fighting words. Stockhausen is one of the Art music world's most revered names, and Smetanin happens to be my teacher. Both compose far better stuff than anything the pop market has put out.

Right. This thread has been nothing but a whine-fest.

If you do not like Aus Idol - Don't watch it

If you hate the people that won - Don't buy their albums. They'll fade. Where is scandal'us and Bardot? FADED

If you think classical should be mainstream - too bad, it's not. Rap and RnB and anything with sex in it is mainstream (with some exceptions) Unless you get off your ass and do something about it, it will stay that way. Stop complaining and do something.

If you think classical musicians have no chance in being "successful" as in "money-wise" - think again. The sky's the limit and you're not doing too much about it are you.

If you think Casey is shit - don't buy her album. Don't support her. She'll fade

If you think it takes looks to get into mainstream - Casey, Anthony and Guy are all NOT GOOD LOOKING. I would NOT bang any of them.

If you think that classical music should be rewarded and respected - well yeah it should! Just make the effort! You'll be praised! But the media isn't the only thing that can give you praise...

If you think mainstream musicians have no talent - think again. Think REALLY HARD

If you think people would love classical music if it were promoted and marketed appropriatley - true! Add sex to anything and it should be great! Who's stopping you from making porn with classical music involved? Or a classical australian idol? Sure why not!

We're going around in circles people.

The day that somebody performs in the Australian Idol final, an aria from an opera like La Boheme, La Traviata, Turandot, Cavelleria Rusticana, Pagliacci, Il Trovatore, or a song from Wagner's Ring Cycle, or a folk song from traditional Chinese music, or Something that isn't in fucking 4/4 time, is the day that Australian Idol can claim credibility as a show promoting music and musicians.

Because quite frankly, Australian Idol is an Insult to anybody with an ounce of musical senses. It's an exercise in mediocrity, demonstrating the pathetic nature of the once-great music industry. It convinces people that such disgusting displays of melodic slaughter is actually good, and people are stupid enough to believe that they came to that conclusion themselves.

Everybody would, because if it's on Australian Idol, it Must be good. That's the nature of popular music - people don't actually like popular music, they get Told what they like, and then they are so stupid that they actually believe they came to those conclusions themselves.

I don't find it an insult and I DO have musical sense.

Just think of those singers as a tacky musical instrument. All they do is play other people's songs, which is what instruments do. But eventually they can't do this forever. They can't survive.

Think of it this way, us classical musicians know what defines music, the core of it, we slam at the boundaries of its definition and make it wider. Let the tacky popstars dance around the boring cliches of music. We just broaden it. We're the real workers, and as much as we're not "acknowledged" by mainstream, I think that it works great for the conscience that we're the ones experimenting and studying the beauty of music. That's our role. And because this is our role, WE will survive through musical history. Not Pop Stars.

And if anyone else doesnt know what the fuck I mean, I'm talking about the musical history as in experimentation, the INVENTIONS of music, not the idols themselves. Like the 12 tone system (atonality) and minimalism blah blah blah.

Phanatical, why dont YOU go fucking die? You made your point on page one and now youve crapped on for 21 pages. If you werent so fucking hysterical, you can clearly see that classical music is timeless and that all this pop crap you are so fervently against is just that. Pop crap. Manufactured for the masses, because people like it and it sounds good. Real musicians, real music, that will endure. If people want to watch Australian Idol, they'll fucking watch Australian Idol. I frankly dont listen to any music. The only thing I listen to is Matchbox 20 because I think it sounds good and for no other reason. I personally love classical music and all that stuff considered as "real music". And singing is my life, and theres nothing I appreciate more than "real" talent, but I'm not arse like you. Yeah sure, the Australian public are drones told what they want to like. Big fucking deal. Real music will never die, I dont know what the fuck your crapping on about. Inner child I feel has already ended this discussion with her last few posts and yet the argument keeps going. Get over it and do something about it. Will I get flamed for this post by you freaks? I dont care. I trudged through 21 pages of YOUR crap just to see what all this commotion was about, and here is my bloody 2 cents.

The argument keeps going, because I am right. Australian Idol is Destroying the music industry, and is even having an impact on the Art music world. The continued existance and market saturation of manufactured pop music such as Australian Idol will continue to wear away the credibility and marketability of Art music. Never in western history has Art music been so subordinate to the Popular/Folk music world as it is today, and if this decline continues, there won't Be an art music world to defend.

The simple fact is that at no other point in history have the populace been Told what to like. With the rise of the mass media and the commercialisation of music, Art music is increasingly suffering while Popular music continues to thrive. I for one believe that Classical musicians are Owed the respect and financial support that they deserve, but this becomes increasingly unlikely as we actually hear shows like Australian Idol deriding the classical music world, and telling potential performers (such as the daniel fellow) that they must become Less classical.

The mass market Should be paying our classical musicians millions of dollars to practice their craft, while people who like Idol should be the ones in basement jazz bars trying to find an audience of 10 people.

well you dont have to buy casey's album or contribute to channel ten's ratings. these shows are set up purely for record labels to make lots of money very quickly in numerous bursts. dont blame the show, blame the teen-boppers that support it.

The "teen-boppers" are TOLD who they like. If the media told them that they loved the music of Bartok, then they'd be all buying his music.

Seriously, people buy music if they like what they hear, not all record-buyers are 13 year old teenage girls, thats about 1% of the market.

The reason why classical music and your type of whatever you do at the Con is struggling is because it wont sell! You think you can make a living out of it? Make millions for your art? Nope - because there's just not enough people that would buy your records. Most of the population don't give a shit whether a mainstream singer can't do whatever you say they can't, because they don't notice! they don't have the musical sense you do! they just listen to what sounds good to their ears, and currently, that's Pop and Idol etc.

You can whinge all you like about how classical musicians should be millionares from performing their art, but the simple fact is, not enough people would buy your records, because the majority of the population won't enjoy it as much as "pop" music

how about a show of hands

who believes that it is the consumer that dictates the direction of pop music?
