hay jus wondering whats the best related text for belonging if ur studying immigrant chronicles

even if it relates to just one of this poems .. i need to finalise some notes for belonging

trials in week 10/11 in term 2 for us >.<

Try looking for any texts that involve the experiences of a second generation Australian, that way you can compare Skrzynecki's journey for belonging to that of another migrant family.
Any one that you already have picked is probably fine as long as you understand how the two texts relate to each other.
I know the Area of Study has changed but this thread should be helpful:

Concepts of Belonging in Immigrant Chronicle

Feliks Skryznecki:

This poem describes the life of the migrant his father was and the hardships he had to overcome with leaving a world behind he knew to a new world.

Examples are:

His garden: It is a place were Felik’s creates to belong, where the repetious work of the garden he put into hte garden has a sense of security and purpose. While Felik’s doesn’t belong in Australian society or culture. Instead he creates his own world which is his garden, which has the safety and beauty of his garden. “Spent Years walking its perimeter / from sunrise to sleep” used in stanza 1, lines 5-6 this technique of imagery uses the physical sense of his belonging

Work: Felik’s created a place to feel like he belonged with his work, rewarding the physical work he did. Peter Skryznecki potrayed him as hard working man who does speak very little, but whom prides himself in the work he has done. Examples used in this are”Alert, Brisk and Silent” in stanza 1, line 7, reveal that he is a compressed and powerful energy. While imagery again is used of a powerful manual worker whose hands are described as “darkened” this reveals the safety and security that can be achieved by physical labour.

The past: Felik’s bonds with his past as a barrier of belonging. He never really belongs in his new life in Australia, he instead recreates a new life with his garden, work and polish friends. He often reminsces about the pre-war and poland. It reminds him of his youth where a time was happier, uncomplicated before anything. “They reminisced .../ about farms where paddocks flowered” Stanza 3, line 6-7. This adds depth and meaning to the poem

School: Peter belongs to his new home, and knows that his education at St Patricks college will create more of this experience of belonging. But as he Peter grows up the growing chasm between Felik’s and Peter is divided, with example “Stumbling over tenses in Caesar’s Galliac War” Stanza 7, Line 2 adds depth and meaning to the rising conflict between Feliks and Peter

St Patricks College

This poem sets the story of the years of when Peter Skryznecki was in school.

The School: St Patricks college, a well know school in sydney, Skryznecki doesn’t feel like he belongs to this schol. The poem makes reference to details of the schools environment with the second stanza opening with “Our Lady” where that is a reference to Mary, (Stanza 2, line 5) this imposes her watching from the building. However her face is “Overshadowed by clouds” Stanza 2, Line 5. The metaphor of this is acting omnious foreshadowing of Skryznecki’s future school. It could be a suggestion to a barrier of belonging.

Suburb: His sense of not belonging inclue the surrounding suburb, of where the school is located, the repetion of “For eight long years” it communicates how long Skyrznecki attended the school for, and how it was a routine of life. Also a disconneciton of not belonging is “like a foregin tourist” stanza 3, line 6, this simile creates irony in the poem, where Skryznecki is from not from the typical anglo saxon background, this could lead to how he is feeling not to belong.

10 Mary Street

The childhood home of where Skyrzynecki grew up.

The Home: It has both a literal and symbolic belonging significance. On the literal sense it is the typical home where migrants would have chosen to live in, with it in a semi industrial location. Symbolically the house represents alot more, it shows the Skryznecki’s looked for a home with a sense of security, identity, safety and place to belong. The home was a refuge from the new and strange world. It provided a place for them to belong

Towards the end of the poem, the details of possibility of the house being “Pulled Down” stanza 5, line 7. The safety and security of the home is “gazetted for industry” stanza 3, line 9 is due to the fact the home is getting pulled down, in spite of the family’s maitence and care for this home. He also uses personification in use of the homes description “China’s blue coat” stanza 3 , line 2. Also reveals how fragile the home is,And it is too well cared for.

The garden: This garden is symbolic of where the Skryznecki’s feel one place where they actually belong. It conveys the imagery of growth and nurture, and positive imagery, the simile used is, “Tended roses ... / like adopted children” stanza 2, lines 8-9. This reveals the perspective his parents had love and admiration for this garden. The well tendered vegetable garden created a cultural component to their Polish culture, aswell as there sanctuary that they live in.

Migrant Hostel

Parkes Hostel: This hostel represents the inhabitants that come and go from this place, but nobody really seems to have a sense of control of where they are going or belonging yet. There is a sense of anonyonmity in the first stanza. And sinister overtones used in the poem
