Does anyone know of what monologue themes are cliched or "over-used" in HSC drama monologues...?

'Talking To An Audience' style monologues

Also stay clear of anything from:
*Alice In Wonderland
*Bombshells
*The Vagina Monologues
*RENT (Maureens protest in particular)
*Shakespeare (unless your an incredible performer)

physical theatre - slow motion fight scenes, armless interviews, etc.

also... i am aware that the markers mark IP and GP from objectives, however it is impossible to mark content from subjective POV also... slightly conflicting....

-Slowmo anything
-Mimed walls
-Hands/Arms through
-Fighting or Dancing
-'Piggy' Backs
-People used as puppets
-Mirroring movements
-Miming each word instead of saying it

It is. But then anything artistic falls into this conflict as well. If you really don't like it, then stick to Maths.

also cliche: Depression.

My monologue had all those in bold.
But it was a pretty heavy piece, and one of those exceptions to the rule.

If you want to do physical theatre, try to do a comedic/light piece.
It will generally reach your audience better.

My IP was heavily physical, and I created a piece which gave a message, but still had a bit of lightheartedness to it in parrts. Create a balance; don't go for pure 'Mr. Bean' style humour. It probably won't be as effective.

Yeah, suppose it's just one of those instances where it would be great if marking was purely objective and that pieces weren't denoted due to cliched elements...

I never meant do a shallow piece, I meant that certain, dark pieces need stillness.

You'd be surprised how often it gets done. Markers must be sick of it by now.

Also "Roxie" scene from Chicago gets done heaps apparently. By singers anyway.

That's why musicals should generally be avoided. Especially Broadway. Off-Broadway or Independent are safer from being overdone, but the threat is still there. mainly because monologues are limited in this form.
