Short question: Do I go with what I'd rather do at uni, or what would be more convenient?

Full question: So like the sig says, Combined actuarial studies with advanced maths Now any maths student knows about how I pick a major to walk down in advanced maths to do.

At school, because I talked more about my maths degree with my teachers than the actuarial studies degree, they recommended I go through with pure maths. And I do want to do this. Pure maths, well, being so close to the heart of what maths encompasses, really does interest me.

But I got a 98+ ATAR with a 97 in maths. This allows me to enrol for quantitative risk. Which is probably gonna complement actuarial studies WAY more due to simply what the course involves.

Choosing a complementary degree may be beneficial? Some subjects like microeconomics overlap into both degrees on top of just MATH1151 this way.

But I probably miss out on a few things I was looking forward to in pure maths, e.g. complex analysis (mainly cause they sounded interesting though, so uninformed may play a role in this).

Opinions on what I should do would also be appreciated.

Please do what you are interested in and not just for the sake of having a job. Your actuarial degree is already very employable.

Looking at the required subjects for the quantitative risk major (http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/plans/2016/MATHR13956.html) and the handbook page for your desired program (http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/programs/2016/3589.html), from what I can see, it seems that you don't have to choose your Adv Maths major until second year, as your first year will only be compulsory courses. So, maybe give your question some time - experience MATH1151/1251 and other compulsory subjects. And then from this, you'll have more to go off when you have a think about this dilemma again, later this year.
