I just accepted a mid yr entry into Business and Commerce at Parra, and i want 2 know which major is better? like in job wise and what is it like?, Accounting major or Banking and Finance?
And on the course hand book it said (Required for students undertaking the Accounting major) if i am planing 2 do accounting as a major, will i need to pick the unit under that? cause i want 2 do Introduction to Information Systems instead.

I was doing bus and comm in semester 1 (now transferred to bus/law). You need to do Accounting Reports and Decisions for the accounting major. You can't do intro to information sytems in semester one beacuse it's not part of the core choices.

The units for semester one is usually:

1. Management foundations
2. Intro to bus law
3. Either; accounting info for managers or accounting reports and decisions (you have to do ARD if u want to major in accounting).
4. Either; Aus and the global economy or microeconomics (either one is fine, I heard aus and global economy is easier, but i did micro).

Not sure if you need the units in a diff order because you're starting mid yr, best to email the course coordinator and find out.

You can major in both accounting and banking and finance I think, you can do a double major in B bus and comm.

Hope that helps.

Hi rego,

I'm doing business and commerce as well, but not accounting or banking & finance so I can't help you with that bit BUT if you do plan on doing either of those than you do need to do the given subjects (eg. I'm doing marketing so in first year I had to do Consumer Behaviour) so if there's a similar condition for Accounting then you will have to do it because it will probably be a pre-requisite for 2nd and 3rd year accounting subjects.

Hope that helps. :)

That depends on what you want to do, neither is better or worse for all people

And where it says you have to do a specific unit for a major you have to do it of you want that major, ask the unit coordinator

just so you guys konw - Aus and the Global Economy is nothing like the unit used to be - ie memorise the textbook and you'll be right lol..

now, it's a lot of social/political/human rights economics as opposed to 'economics economics' - do you get what i mean?

It's really interesting but it makes it hard... especioally since we're the guinea pig group so teh unit coordinator is all over the place...

you do stuff like... whether we can have an international union movement, the impacts of inflation on unemployment and vice versa...

but most the semester is spent on issues like the human rights in aus and how it's linked to eth economy... impact of workchoices on economic stuff.... whether globalisation or localisatio nis better... can socialism be achieved/ can democracy be achieved? etc

so it's more about - linking issues to their economic factors/impacts as opposed to placing australia in a category within the global economy or learning anout 'economics' as such.

Aus & global economics is quit interesting, but you don't have lecture note and books for it. You have to come to the lecture.

yeh.. the only thing that's hsita bout the lack of books too is if you actually do your work each week unlike the vast majority of people, you have to print copious amounts of articles n stuff so eats away at your printing budget a bit... but most are at least interesting :)

Easy to get good marks too :) we did our presentations the night before and got 90% for both because the lectures give you all the theory really so you only need to research the practical implications, a lot of which is just duh duh common sense stuff... eg - doesnt take a genius to put asylum seekers and human rights issues together :)

otherwise top subject, which was ACTUALY INTERESTING..
