Hello there. I'm currently being very indecisive and confused. Help is appreciated :)

So I've been undecided about whether to make

B Media (PR & Advertising) - UNSW

or

B Communication (Public Communication) - UTS

my first preference on my UAC form. And there are a few reasons for this.

I'd been very determined to get into the UNSW degree until recently when I brought this up in a conversation, and I was told that UTS Communications degrees are very well respected. After reading through some online discussions, it seemed like quite a number of people did in fact say that UTS would be the better university because it offers more practical opportunities that would attract more employers. I also read that relevant USYD courses are too theory-based and therefore less appealing to employers.

It's interesting that I haven't found much discussion on the BMedia (PR&A) course offered by UNSW in terms of its structure, content, practical opportunities / internships or employability for graduates. Then again, I understand that it is a degree that hasn't been around all that long. Not as long as the UTS Communications degrees anyway.

I can't help but wonder, when comparing the UNSW and UTS degrees (mentioned above), whether the UTS degree is in fact better, or if it may seem that way because its reputation for Communications has been engrained for quite a while.

Considering the above, can anyone help or express their opinion on this matter?

Hi mate,

I do Bus/Law at UTS but my girlfriend does Communications (Writing and Cultural Studies)/Law and loves it incredibly much. She finds that it's very practical in the sense that all assessments are based on some form of practical piece that you spend the entire semester developing (and being assessed on it as you go), and every tutor she has had has had extensive work experience in the industry she wants to be employed in and so they teach directly along the lines of what they know to be useful if you were working. They also work in very intimate small classes which she finds to be great for workshopping her assignments and general learning. UTS has had a solid reputation for their Communication's faculty for some time now, but you can see in the chart below that UTS/UNSW/USYD don't differ all that much in terms of graduates being employed:

I obviously can't comment on UNSW and USYD being any less practical, but I think you'll find UNSW to be quite similar to UTS in the way they teach as they are often quite similar (small classrooms, practical emphasis, etc), e.g. law and commerce are taught very similarly between UTS and UNSW, but UNSW will have harder examinations. Having said that I don't know anyone doing Communications or Media at UNSW/USYD, so take everything I say about this with a grain of salt.

But seeing as the graduate employment rates between the 3 unis don't differ so much, you should probably just go with the uni that you feel most comfortable with.

That's a relief! I still am leaning towards UNSW since I'm more familiar with it, and it really seems there aren't any outstanding differences between UNSW, UTS and USYD as you've shown. Also, it's great that your girlfriend is loving her course, it definitely sounds interesting.

Thank you for your helpful input!
