I assume you pay for pages printed in the Uni libraries? If so, would it likely cost less to pay for that or get your own printer? It may sound a little silly but I'm not sure whether I should be going out and buying a printer for my first year or not. Thank you .

Depends on what printer you have and what cartridges you use (ie OEM or compatible). I'm assuming your going to need to print a lot of pages per 'session', so for those I'd suggest you print atUni and it saves you alot of time.
However, I'd also suggest buying a cheap/modest inkjet printer, just in case you need to print one or two pages at home.

Or
You could buy a laser monochrome printer. High initial cost, but lower printing costs.

I couldn't live without my printer at home - to have to go to uni to get stuff printed would be annoying (eg. assignments on weekends/days i'm not at uni). I think you should probably have something for emergencies. I even had my own printer when I lived at college - yes the colleges had printers, but organising to top up your account on weekends wasn't possible, and when I moved my docs onto the other computers (couldn't print from my room to the printers as the system didn't work with macs lol) i would loose formatting.

Printers are generally not that expensive - it is the ink that is expensive. However you can find black/white printers that use cheap ink - word of warning canon/pixma printers have very expensive ink, and you can't operate the printer without having all the ink cartriges (eg. even though you only want to print black/white, it wont let you print without all the colours being present).

I think uni printing is about 11c a page (at usyd in any case)

A printer of your own would be more convenient. Not sure which uni you are referring to, but at Mac, there's paid printing at the library and all other computer labs on campus. If you do IT/Computing etc, they give you a monthly quota of free printing.

I live on campus, so we have access to the uni printers in our building, and our rooms are small enough that printers would take up a considerable amount of space. On the other hand, if you have to commute to uni, definitely get your own printer - you'll need it.

Thank you so much everyone for the advice! I think I will invest in a black and white laser print/copy/scanner. That should suffice, I hope :)

Make sure you get a decent printer which lasts :p

On that note, i've never printed stuff at uni myself, the group assignments one of the others do it because I never put money in my card.. if needed I will print at home, only at home (or if it's too many pages, black & white @ officeworks)
