During my HSC year, I was just so against group tuition. It does nothing for me and i just saw it as a waste of time having to be dragged through with a class that was not at the same level. Some people were too advanced and they were grouped with people who didnt know a syllabus existed

One on one was the way to go for me. Im not really a confident person to shout out in group situations so this way, i can ask stuff and also ask what is relevant to ME and what I feel inadequate in. I spent 400 on group tuition for a term (paid for it and signed contract so i couldnt back out after the first shit lesson ) for economics. After that i quit and simply continued my one on one tuition for maths (been havign that since yr 7) and ended up ok in the HSC.

Concerning HSC enrichment stuff: I went to the typical usyd ones for english and the harbourside convention for the AOS. Waste of time and waste of money. they didnt tell me anything i didnt know already and ALOT were just conducted by drones milking money off stressed HSC kiddos (like me ). Perhaps this is because im a nerd or something cos i heard some people actualyl found some use in it...

i go to a group tutor thing for maths, its like 3 to 1 tho so its pretty good, and its run by teachers so they know exactly what they are teaching.. 35 for an hour and a half, its helping my maths heaps

Anyway I think one on one tutoring is best since you pretty much have to concentrate!! no one else in the class and you can't doze of. Plus you can ask more questions that way.

Yeah, but the best tutors are generally teachers who are actually teaching the course, as they have been trained in the course and in teaching (well thats what my Maths tutor was, but she didnt teach at my school)

I'm not a fan of Coaching Colleges because half the time it's run very commercial-like and there's that lack of personal interest in each and every student. But one-on-one teaching isn't so great either because working in a small group can be very helpful and probably more engaging. This is coming from a position of someone whose been tutored in colleges, had one-on-one tuition and been in private group tuitions, as well as teaching one-on-one and in groups.

My advice to anyone is to: find a private tutor who is willing to teach 3-10 students per class for at least 2 hours each session per week. The benefit of this is that - you still get the individual attention in respect to your personal weaknesses, but it's much more engaging to have a group to discuss questions with. In many cases, this also turns out to be much cheaper than coaching colleges or one-on-one teaching. I charge $20 for 2 hours for a group of at least 3 students; teaching is much more fun for me when I have a small group and... much more profitable since most of my classes have 5-10 students each.

I also allow my students to ring me up any day during certain times and they can ask me any questions relating to the classwork or otherwise. I find that I start to teach all the children in one family (siblings, cousins or friends from school) because they all refer each other. Group tution has the kind of 'family' atmosphere that is less commercial or business-like (eg. no "10% discount if you pay a term in advance!" kinda stuff).
