How do you calculate the initial velocities (vertical and horizontal) of a projectile?

In those cases, you measure the distance over time for a short distance, to come up with an estimate. You also measure the angle of projection.

u_x=ucos(angle of projection)
u_y=usin(angle of projection)

Some standard ways of measuring that initial velocity, is with a motion detector, photogates, strobe photography or video analysis.
