Yea just generally, how many students get over 85, 75 WAM etc in UNSW? Any ideas?

go to the dean of engineering honour list page (or something, forget the name exactly), all those guys have over 75 WAM.

then you can go and find some statistics about the general engineering cohort, eg, how many students, and you can get a rough estimate.

Depends on faculty/school/subject/myriad of other factors. For example, Arts are generally fairly gay and fit to a bell curve with average around 70, while over at MathsStats they won't have any issue giving mostly HD if they feel it's appropriate (generally more with upper year Higher subjects).

The proportion of marks lying in each grading range is determined not by any formula or quota system, but by the way that students respond to assessment tasks and how well they meet the objectives of the course. Nevertheless, since higher grades imply performance that is well above average, the number of distinctions and high distinctions awarded in a typical course is relatively small. At the other extreme, on average 6.1% of students do not meet minimum standards, a little more (8.6%) in first year courses.

Note that the chart there is for each individual course. getting a D or HD Average is a bit harder :p
