huh? who won't suffer? UWS will suffer regardless if they can't attract the number of students necessary to fill all their vacancies

I assumed you were using UWS as an analogy. Perhaps I was incorrect, and you brought it up simply for the lulz?

But as I already pointed out, it's a silly example and analogy since the ALP has said that they'll make up for the funding.

how do they make up for the funding? by taking away money that should go towards services such as hospitals, or by increasing our taxes.

I'm not entirely sure. I know there's a rather large surplus that they can always deal with, and I have no problem with increase taxes either. I very much doubt the ALP will take money away from hospitals or education. Maybe they can take some money away from defense?

That's a rather cruddy way of putting it, but yes. The greater good. :ninja:

No, what you were advocating was the opposite: the small minority, rather than the greater good.

"I have no problem with increased taxes": 25 mil Australians disadvantaged so that a couple of thousand of students can be advantaged

What percentage of Year 12 students go onto university?

Not sure the percentage, perhaps someone else can share the stats. However, 50,000 students were eligible to receive a UAI last year. That's 0.2% of the population. So, 99.8% of the population would be disadvantaged

But that's only taking ONE year worth of students. In the long run (particularly if it's more affordable), how many people would benefit from such a program, as a percentage of the population? I.e how many people GO to uni, or will do.

ok, at any time we have 0.6-1% of the population at university (3-5 year degrees). Those are the people benefiting from it. That leaves 99% of people funding the 1% currently at university. This would suggest that at any time (even in 20 years) you still have 99% of people funding 1%

Do you really think that HECS is currently a barrier for people attending university? I am yet to meet someone who won't go to uni because it is too expensive.

But has one percent of the country BEEN to uni? Or will one percent of the country in the future GO to uni?
