Answer the following questions about the 6 developmental theories (Psychosocial theory, Behaviourism and Social Learning Theories, Ethological theory, Bioecological theory, Life Course theory, and the Cognitive Developmental theories - Piaget, Vygotsky and Information Processing).

  1. Are the theories in stages or are they gradual? (are they continuous or discontinuous?). Which of the theories are continuous and which are discontinuous?.
  2. Which theories consider the individual, social influences, and/or the psychological processes?
  3. Which theories propose that the child is a ‘blank slate’? Which assume prior knowledge of some degree?
  4. Are the children active or passive participants in their learning/development? Identify active or passive for each theory.
  5. Is timing important in development? Does culture/community make a difference? Identify for each theory, what is the most important in influencing learning and development.
  6. Which theory proposes nature, which is nurture. Do any propose both nature and nurture?
  7. For each theory, how much does biological processes influence development?

Use these prompts to critically compare and contrast each theory.

It says you already took your HSC.. is this focused psychology work from uni because if so the SAC forum may not be a helpful place to post as the subject very broadly touches on psychology. If I'm incorrect, apologies.

Hi,
Yes it is for uni. I just wasn’t sure if this site even has a uni option or where I should post this.

I believe that Society and Culture would be a good option for you if you wish to study psychology at university. Society and Culture allows you to develop your knowledge of the interaction of people, societies, cultures and environments. It also explores other aspects of societies and cultures, such as power, authority, gender, technologies and globalisation.

Society and Culture also covers cross-disciplinary concepts and social research methods from fields such as anthropology, communication, philosophy, social psychology and sociology, which are fields you are likely to cover within a Bachelor of Psychology.

I hope this helps! :D

which one would be better for me? I'm trying to decide which to pick: PDHPE or society and culture? I've heard both are alright in terms of scaling and i dont really care about scaling. however both the topics seem interesting to me? can anyone give me any advice? im looking to do psychology in uni.

I think that if you're looking to take a subject that will allow you to build a foundation of knowledge for your psychology studies at university, Society and Culture is likely to be the better option.

PDHPE at Preliminary and HSC level is a subject that focuses more on developing you in terms of physicality, emotions and spirituality. It also teaches you and allows you to practise ways of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I think PDHPE also does contain a minor psychology component, but the difference it has with Society and Culture is that not only do you cover more content related to your chosen field of study beyond the HSC in Society and Culture, the content you cover in Society and Culture may actually be more directly relevant to what you would cover in a Bachelor of Psychology than what is taught in PDHPE.

Based on this, I believe Society and Culture would be the better option for you.
