Hi whats the purpose of the ceramic top in the induction cook top. Does it act as an insulator so the heat can be more efficiently transferred to the pan?

Isn't the cook top just something to sit the pan on, I know that you can just put a sheet on newspaper over the top of the cook top to catch any spills so it dosn't have to be ceramic, just non conductive.

I think it has something to do with stopping possible sparking. Could be wrong though.

Excellent answer 3unitz.

To elaborate further yes the ceramic top acts as a safety platform to perform two operations:

1. To act as an insulator and resist any conduction between pan base and other metal surfaces. This in turn eliminates the reduction of eddy currents as these are primarily what are used to heat the base of the pan.
2. To help support the pan base by providing some friction between ceramic and metal base. This way it does not slide off.

Hope this helps.
