Purpose of non linear chronology (1 Viewer)

I want to use the point of non linear chronology in my response for the 50th gate in relation to history and memory. But nothing is coming to my mind.

So I was wondering from your perspective why Baker used this kind of structure.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Thanks

I haven't read the text, but in a general sense, non-linear narratives are useful used to reflect the content of what's being expressed. Like the film Memento, where the fractured narrative reflects the fractured memory of the protagonists. Other times it can be used to create suspense, by not revealing preceding events until later in the narrative. It can also be used to create a dissociative effect, where the ending feels positive (but in a standard timeline is actually negative), as seen in the film Irreversible.
